HELP! Clutch gone.

Was travelling down the A421 earlier today went for a gear change and completely lost all power. Couldnt get it in any gear so coasted to a halt on the hard shoulder. was able to get it in gear and get back home, then drove to toyota and dropped it off with them. Gave them a rang now and they think its the clutch itself not the actual cable. They said it could either be the plate, friction plate or bearings. They said that the cables were fine and there was enough fluid in the system.

The previous owner had a clutch fitted not long before I had the car but I have a suspicion that it was a hunk of you know what. They originally quoted me £800 plus £100 an hour for a 5 hour job, they lowered their quote for £614 all in. But was wondering if anyone could give me any help with it? Should I try to find a clutch from someone like ams or nix or should i have a new one supplied by them at £614 which seems like a lot. Although be it I dont know the cost for something like this.

EDIT: I have a 2004 04 T Sport

If I were you I'd buy a decent clutch from a supplier and have a local garage of a good reputation fit it. I'm sure it would be a lot less than 600 odd quid, Damn! Saying that I've just paid £225.00 to have my hand brake all replaced for it's MOT. Bad time of year for all these bills

sounds to me like you dont really have much choice mate as the cars at toyota already, your best off sticking a brand new one in for sure, dont wanna be doing that job twice,so if it was me id just bite the bullet and let them do it,least that way if it gives you any hassle you can just take it back there, but they will do a good job no doubt being toyota, sometimes you just have to

ive just drop mine off about a hour ago to have new clutch put in,this guy i know hes doing it for 100 quid,so id say unless you know someone quite well whos a good mechanic,i wouldnt take the risk,i took my last gt to a "just clutches" garage,we are specialists and all that crap, they did a well shit job, next day came out of work only to find gearbox oil pissing out all over the floor, and a ford fiesta indicater bulb rammed in my gearbox as a sump plug, really wasnt happy, had to take it to toyota in the end anyway cos they had done such a awful job

Thanks for the advice guys. Erm also what about getting it somebody like Se7en. I know I would have to get the car up to him. But Ive heard good things about him. Would he possibly be able to do the work for me if anyone knows him.

They probably mean the shifter cables seeing as it was reluctant to go in gear ;)

But yeah, £100 an hour  feck that, it's a Toyota not a Ferrari. No way would I let them do the work unless you have money to burn. A reputable garage will do it for half that, and probably do a better job...main dealers aren't anywhere as good as they should be...

Yeah I would forget Mr T that sounds like a royal rip off, I had mine replaced at my local garage last February around £400 including the 5 hours of labour and the Exedy kit (Disc, Plate and Pressure bearing). I even thought that was high but its a reputable garage and I didn't want to go "under the arches" for a clutch.

clutch from any parts place will cost you £80 to £150. Labour from any independant garage will cost you around £150 to £200 the lower prices are if you pay cash, i had mine done 3 weeks ago paid £86 for clutch as i get a good discount from my supplier and then the fitting cost me £175 at a mates garage, as it was a saturday and he was busy.

just helping with prices to quote, sorry to hear it happened to you.

Hi all, firstly just wanted to say what a pleasure it is to be part of such a great helpful and caring community. Was given so much advice and info on what to do cant really thank all you CCUK members enough. Unfortunately have been on a business conference in Northampton and barely had signal on my phone and the internet was dreadfully slow, although they did have dave on the in-room tvs so i was atleast able to keep watching top gear. But because of this havent been able to get on the forum pretty much since monday night i think.

After much thinking decided to get it done at toyota just for the peace of mind really, I knew that she was in good hands with people who know what theyre doing and if ive got any problems then they are forced to help me really. After a couple of phone calls with them got them down to £500 which I know isnt great but again as i said above im happy to pay as I want the best care possible.

Picked her up this evening about 5:30 from Bromham Toyota which were very good again and glad I went back to them. And although getting used to the new feel of the clutch is a slight pain I absolutely loved driving her again, felt like forever since id last revved it up to 8200rpm in lift.

But again just wanted to say thanks for all the help youve given me :woohoo:
