Anyone fancy fitting some lowering springs for me....

Recommended Posts

.... very very close to buying some spring for my Gen7

Been quoted £75 - £100 quid for the fitting which I can't afford right now.

Wondering if there is anyone near Chester who wants to save me a bit of cash by helping (read doing all the work) for me ?

Worth an ask

Thanks all

- Scott

P.S: wouldn't be for a few weeks

Just my two pence worth mate. I had the offer from some members here to do it but I went to the garage in the end for these reasons

If all is good it's a 6-8 hour job. You need tools which not everyone has and this can end up stretching it out over a few days.

The rear drop links can be a bitch to remove even at a garage they struggled to get mine off and ended up having to grind and burn them off in the end. They had the car up on a lift and had industrial strength tools. And it took 2 hours to remove and replace the rear springs cos of the drop links

Now try and imagine that on your driveway haha.

I know a couple of members who have had to do the fronts and then the rears on another day so you would be driving round with lowered front and high back.

By all means if someone wants to have a go that's awesome but be warned about needing the specialist equipment if there is an issue.

YEP. i had problems with front drop links had to grind em off. rears couldnt split springs from the shocks with hand tools and had to book into a garage to do rear paid the guy who helped me then paid garage to do rear. i would consider going to garage unless someone can do it for free.

you may need some/all of the following tools. trolley jack, axle stands, grinder, socket set + extension bar, allen key set, spring compressors, possibly air compressor and air gun to split springs from shocks.

a guy in blackburn (garage) MARTINKING6 was in corp section made me an offer to to it, £25 p/h and said approx 2 hrs.

Any tricker than gen 6 change? As I did mine without knowing what I was doing really, took a long time but really pleased in the end as I learnt a lot by doing it.

However what will be really useful is: Compression tool for springs, around a tenner on ebay, breaker bar(or in my case just a huge bit of pipe), allen keys, replacement droplinks and what came in real handy was impact wrench, £65 but worth every penny :)

All that added up means your garage cost is pretty good, but you do miss out on learning how to do it yourself. Took me a couple of days(!!!) but now could do them in half hour or so a corner :)

The rear droplinks dont need to be removed, so whichever garage did that they made loads of work for themselves! Its the front droplinks that need to be removed and often have to be ground off.

I told them to change them matey while they were at it as I had already bought them anyways. Didn't cost me anymore as I had agreed a deal of £100 for all 4 corners

Gen 7 springs are easy to do did both of our cars in a day the second one only taking around 3 hours from start to finish. As for specialist tools all that is needed is spring compressors. I also think as Serratia said that the rears could be done without removing the drop links. P.m me if you are interested in me doing them for you not far from you.

Yeh to be honest 100 quid is a good price, I normally charge 50-80 depending on how many seized bolts I come across. On a good run 2-3 hours is about right...

I will offer my help if your still looking next year when it warms up, I have had enough of working on cars in the snow rain and cold lol

Thanks for all the input guys

Was hoping it was a cheap, easy job I could pay for with a few beers

Sounds like I need an expert.

Rsvr, Martin & Rory thanks all for offering. Nice to have options, I plan to stop messing about and buy the springs so you may be hearing from me soon

Get the springs and you're halfway there.

Also bear in mind a few weeks after fitting them when the springs settle you will need an alignment done to make sure all is in check. So make sure you have that money set aside :)

Springs is not a hard job at all. I plan to do basslinetoads springs with him soon. Just need to get youself a set of spring compressors for about £15 from ebay. If you want to get it done by a garage. I highly recommend martinking, i literally JUST got back from having a clutch replaced from them. Brilliant job :)
