25th Anniversary
Hi Wanna know that changing from 215/40/17 tyres on my alloys to 215/50/17 is fine? I assume so but just double checking for piece of mind. Edited March 17, 2014 by 25th Anniversary
Antilochi
providing your speedo was reading correctly with the 215/40/17's, there would be a +6.65% speed change, so when your speedo is reading 60 mph you would actually be travelling 64 mph. Apart from having to watch your speed, you should be fine

Antilochi
no problem. got a spreadsheet on my computer to work it all out for me. Saves so much hassle. ideally you want to aim for +/-3% but it's not that big a problem really. Also remember that the car will be covering that percentage more distance than the tach reads
25th Anniversary
cheers Im sure having 215/40/17 tyres on atm is giving me - speed reading anyway. So by increasing to 50 profile tyres will put it a tad over the correct speedo reading anyway. Edited March 17, 2014 by 25th Anniversary
Xanadu
The sidewall of the tyre will be taller which you might not like the look of. Use this visual calculator to see the difference. http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html#tyresizecalculator
JonSam50
And you will lose some acceleration which isnt good
Kev 16v
Changing to 205/45/17 (if your rims are no wider than 7J), or 215/45/17 would be better, as the loss in acceleration wouldn't be as noticeable.
GreyRacer
Stick to 45 max unless you want to look like one of my sons tractors.

ams
I doubt 215 50 17 will clear the rear arches on a
Chris H72
I was also thinking 215/45/17 would be better. It's quite a common size so tyres are cheaper and you get more choice.
