WTF is this all about?

wow... that's interesting.

I reckon that could get distracting?

You doing the IAM test?

Apparently, it has two big markets: race car and geriatric drivers!

HAHAHA.

which are you?

I did the IAM a few years ago in the crappy Punto we had.

Quite tempted to do a few refresher lessons now i've got a real car :)

for the ROSPA one you have to be re-tested every 3 years to keep you on top of it.

luckily derby council are subsidizing the course for young drivers, so instead of £98 for 3 years membership and 2 tests (one at the end of the 3 years - tuition is free)

i've only had to pay £28 :D

it's mostly forward observation and anticipation.

if you're paying attention and reading the road ahead, you shouldn't really ever have any surprises while driving.

It just helps make the drive smoother... less stopping and starting, it really makes you notice how other people drive too.

then there's also guidance in road positioning, correct gear for certain situations, lines through bends, etc.

It's all about a smooth, eventless and safe drive.

But they do promote a progressive drive, so it's not just for people who want to drive slowly to be safe.

Or at least that's the IAM from what i remember. Not sure about Rospa

The rospa course is basically the same course police traffic officers do, so much so we learn from the police 'road craft manual' and have to follow the system;

information, position, speed, gear, accelerate (action).

the examiners for the final test are serving or ex traffic police.

weird. that the same with IAM.

Learn frm Roadcraft and a final exam with a (ex) police officer.

i wonder what the actual differences are, other than name of the organisation then....?

Maybe it's just the required re-testing?

Intrigued to do the Rospa test now.....

might have to wait til i finish the IAM on the bike first tho.

end of the day, any advanced training helps significantly, regardless of the name of the course.

I did find the IAM drivers to mostly be lots of old men in flatcaps though.

The IAM bikers however are a great laugh.
