SlickCelica
http://www.specialistpaints.com/custom-aerosol-cans I'm looking at the candy red or sparkle paints for my calipers. When I added one £9.99 can to my basket it added VAT and shipping and became £20 !! Some of the claims sound abit of a stretch too. "Specialist Paints Sparkle Pearls are the very best on the planet". What do you guys think? Edited September 10, 2013 by SlickCelica
mr02mcg
Ive never used them so can't help with that, some of those colours are excellent though.

trophytr5
From the instructions, it looks like you need 2 cans (metallic base and candy) plus, "for best results", another one of lacquer. £29.97 plus VAT plus P&P Ouch!
dazzy
I have used them. It was shadow chrome aerosole that I ordered but me being the impatient ass that I am ruined the finish and didnt bother getting any more. It started off ok and and I pretty much had it done but I put the last coat down too heavy and made a mess. I would deffo use them again tho. Id be using it with a base coat of VHT paint or something. Its for calipers so im not really sure thats necessary either. I have some regular halfords lacquer I can use too. SlickCelica
Their postage costs are insane. Ive found them on ebay selling the "kit". Silver base coat, candy colour, and a lacquer for £32 + £7.99 postage. If I put the same stuff in the basket on their website it works out to £60.56 !! Base Coat £8.99 Candy Colour £9.99 Clear coat £16.49 VAT £10.09 Post £
harv_j
Make sure its all high temperature rated. I know someone who painted their callipers with normal paint & laquer ... it burnt, bubbled & spat all over. Ruined his brakes (discs, pads & callipers) & wheels

Ruined his brakes (discs, pads & callipers) & wheels  I cant see it generating that much heat unless used on a track. Id be using VHT base coat but the rest would probably be standard paint. I have some VHT lacquer but would that really be needed? on another note, the same company run this website and the same kit on ebay is available here: http://kustomcanz.com/product/candy-aerosol-can-kit
Lex_GTS
I painted my rocker cover with VHT base, colour and lacquer, only thing I found was it went on so thick that the bolts caused some cracking when held down. As for using the VHT base and lacquer, why not just shell out for some of the proper paint? They aren't going to act as an insulator by any means. I've known people to use Hammerite on their brakes and it bubbles when hot, when it cools down it goes back to normal. But that should only happen between 150 and 200 Celsius.... As for it only generating that much heat on a track, an emergency stop will heat them up a lot, and if its not the right paint, the constant heating and cooling will do you no favours. I'd do it properly.
Hoody
I done my whole engine bay with the dark candy red from them I used 3 coats of plastic primer, 2 coats of Nissan blade silver, 6 coats of the candy ( u have to use a lot to get the colour as it comes out pink at first and you build it upto the deep red) then 4 coats of laqure to finish. For calilpers I used this Ferrari pearl red: Got it from this seller on eBay: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=270959388629&kw=270959388629
SlickCelica
Lex what do you call proper paint? Hoody that looks awesome. So you didnt bother with their own primer, base paint, or lacquer? Im interested in what exactly you used on the calipers (layers etc) Edited September 9, 2013 by SlickCelica

Im interested in what exactly you used on the calipers (layers etc) Nah I got the rest of the paints from halfords as it worked out cheaper. Even tho I used 5 cans of candy on the engine bay, it still cost a small fortune lol As for the calipers I cheated tbh as I was in a rush, I was changeing the discs at the same time, so I un bolted the calipers and zip tied it to the spring, cleaned it and gave it 2 coats of paint ( cos my where blue and was hard to cover) I then started doing the disc. I then put the caliper back on but the paint was still soft so once it was back on I gave it one last touch up then put the wheel back on
SlickCelica
What I'm getting at is did you use the same Halford plastic primer, Nissan silver and lacquer on the calipers? Hoody
Oh sorry no just that paint from the eBay seller, that's it. Edited September 10, 2013 by Hoody01
Lex_GTS
Proper paint ie the VHT base colour and lacquer, but if its for brakes you should be fine with just some high heat paint without primer. Think VHT base coat is also an adhesion promoter (or some crack) so skipping straight to the paint won't help. If you're put off by the lack of colours, namely the red that looks Matt orange and the blacks that look grey in high heat, look online as there is a hell of a lot more around there. But use the right stuff, trying to clean the wrong stuff off to paint again would be a nightmare.
SlickCelica
Thanks for the replies. That makes sense Lex. I realised hoody used paint specific for high heat on the calipers so im going to have another look on ebay and other places for caliper paint. Its exactly as you said, plain red is abit boring and I dont really fancy risking spoiling my Wilwoods for plain red. Candy red tips the scale slightly so I thought id have a go. SlickCelica
So ive had a look and cant find any candy red for calipers. The closest thing I found was a video about painting any colour calipers. It basically said to use: 1. VHT primer 2. 2k Base Coat (silver) 3. Candy colour (non vht) 4. VHT clear coat. Thats interesting, I presume the bottom and top layer protect the middle ones. The only issue there is VHT paint needs heat to cure so putting the calipers on will be messey as the paint will still be sticky. Any ideas?
