Aftershock
Halfords are currently doing their own brand 5W-30 oil at £10 for 4 liters, A good deal for anyone with oil burning issues, think they had 10w-40 aswell
Black Knight
...A good deal for anyone with oil burning issues... Which I have. But 5w-30 burns off soooo fast that its false economy even at £10. Currentley having to run 20w-50 to slow the burn rate down to a managable level I would go with 10w-40 for a tenner but naturally my local Halfords is all sold out of that!!! Black Knight
ASDA are doing 4 litres of castrol 15 40 up here for 12 quid. Not sure about others Now that would be perfect for mine Best compromise of thickness vs burnability and a decent brand. Will have to go check out my local

HiluxSurf
Ohh interesting. New owner here (of course) and mine does burn oil as well, is there a fault, can it be sorted or is it just a case of the age / miles on the clock?

The old fe engines (1993 - 2000 4e-fe, 5e-fe 7a-fe) are usually just valve stem seals - so usually just a head off job - well worth doing if the car is a good one and the engines running well. stigseviltwin
Ouch litre every 2-300?! I'd be spending a fortune in oil if it was that bad. AMS- Do you think the 4AGE is a good way to sort this? I'm putting some serious consideration to that idea as I've been given room in the garage 4age head that is (7age)
ams
I dont know much about the 4a-ge head conversion Im afraid - sure someone here did it a few years ago - think they turbo'd it after as well - but I cant remember the name
stigseviltwin
I've only ever seen folk talk about it on here never seen anybody go through with it. Been given the go ahead to stick an engine in the workshop thanks to my old man so I'm seriously considering buying a 7afe and an engine stand and going from there. If I balls it up it's no major issue I can just put it in the bin. Could at least see wht the head issue is with the spare engine mibby give it a port and polish. I've saw stuff elsewhere regarding the issue. Seen folk suggesting that you put brake fluid in it (I kid you not) I know some folk have tried diesel. not sure exactly what they say the issue is but apparently it needs releasing whatever it is! Black Knight
The old fe engines (1993 - 2000 4e-fe, 5e-fe 7a-fe) are usually just valve stem seals - so usually just a head off job - well worth doing if the car is a good one and the engines running well. Stem seals have been replaced in mine, after replacing the whole bottom end made no difference, but still no difference! So Fensport have told me next stage is to have the head off and send it to a specialist as the stem, i'll call them tubes!, must need reboring/relining or something! I only embarked on trying to fix it because the rest of the car is perfectley solid. But a pot of money and wasted time later I really wish I hadn't bothered. For the money thats gone into it already I could have fed it with oil for many many years to come :( Oh and just been to my local Asda. Car section is so tiny that they only stock Castrol 1L and there own brand 2L Edited January 4, 2013 by Black Knight
Black Knight
Still no 10w-40 available at Halfords Wisbech, convenient that!!! But…Huzzah…seems Asda do a free click and collect service, which includes their £12 Castrol Oil offer So with cold weather on the way I’ve ordered 2 4L bottles of the Castrol 15w-40. 1 bottle to dump and replace the 20w-50 and 1 bottle to keep it topped up over the next couple months. With the way she burns its going to be the best trade off of thickness vs burnability
