  1. I reckon that thats a good example of technology crossing over though, Bike thechnology coming into cars eg, throttle bodies for outright power, direct injection for efficiency etc. Car tech in bikes eg, v-tec for more mid-range. To be honest, thats one of the reasons the vxr & cars like it are so powerful. Constant & increasing pressure to make cars as green & efficient as possible has led manufacturers to learn how best to extract every last bit of power from each drop of fuel. Obviously, the ability of contemporary ecu's helps a lot too.
  2. I remember when honda released the civic vti & everyone was quacking on about it having 100bhp per litre - 1600cc = 160bhp. around about the same sort of time, yamaha released the r6, which had 200bhp per litre! 600cc = 120bhp. the r6 was very reliable & massivly quick, partially due to being light obviously, but it got me thinking at the time, why can't they just scale up bike engines so they're robust enough to cope with lugging 4 wheels around? Then you'd have a reliable 200bhp naturally aspirated 1.0ltr car, with sensible service intervals!
  3. As with so many thing, its all about location, location, location! I remember absolutely anihilating an old MA70 Supra on one of my favourite B'roads a while back. The guy caught up with me in traffic later & started a conversation. He couldn't believe new cars were so quick. What was I driving? My mum's ford Puma! 270ish bhp of mr T's finest straight 6 loveliness, caned by 125bhp of fancy shape fiesta. (Incidentally, I highly recommend having a go in a ford puma, they're great fun!) Any given comparison done on a vehicles spec is only really relevent on A) paper, or a racetrack. Real life has a way of evening out the playing field. In the words of the late, great Colin McRae: Straight roads are for fast cars, Corners are for fast drivers...
  4. Best go for one thats had a swap done in my opinion. They only made 1000 beams mr2s, so there are way more beams lumps from ss3's. I remember reading on mr2.com that they have more beams mr2 owning menbers with celica engines than those owning 'proper' beams mr2s. take off a few owing to crashes etc & you've suddenly got less than 1000 worldwide. They're always going to be more desirable. Aside from the ecu, the alternator & engine mounts very rarely come up for sale. Definatly find one that someone else has done the leg work on.
  5. X2 above. My old GT was exactly the same. Turned out to be a damaged No.1 lead. Good news is Magnecor leads (or similar) are lots cheaper than when I needed 'em!
  6. There's a blue G7 down my road with gunmetal force 10's on. Looks awesome! He's had them for years so I'm guessing they'll last finish wise - His still look brand new! Good thing about wheels like them is the spokes go right to the edge of the rim. As a result they appear larger than they are, so you can have the handling (& cheaper tyres) benifits of 17's with the looks of 18's. Similarly, a deep dished wheel will always appear smaller than it really is. Talking of team dynamics pro-race though, I have pro-race 1's (now discontinued) on my mr2, I had 205/40 toyo's on mine and ended up with 2 potentialy leathal cracks. Cheap(ish) lightweight wheels + 'Spirited' driving + UK roads = http://www.celica-club.co.uk/forum/index.php?/topic/124841-smack-crack/page__p__1517864#entry1517864 The reason lightweight wheels from the top names, Volk, Enkei etc cost £1500 upwards is not just the name! The materials they make their lightweight (usually forged) wheels from is far superior. Having nearly found out the hard way, I'm definately going to pick my next set on design & spec first, cost second. De-spoiler'd all the way! Seems to be some weird trend round my way too - who can have the widest flaps... Each to his own I guess, I like mine nice & neat...
  7. Stick to the subframe in my experience, with a bit of wood in between for extra protection. The frame rails running under the car & the sills are way too soft for repeated jacking/supporting & WILL deform. I only ever use the sil-seams if using a standard scissor-jack as they clear the seam nicely. The fact that you're weather-proofing the underside of your car means that if you use the sub-frame(s) to start with, you won't have to move the stands half-way through as well! I know it sounds obvious, but dont forget to make sure the axle-stands are well clear of the car before lowering it as well - You wouldn't believe how many times I've watched people tear big holes in their sill with them!
  8. Hang on a minute, these are being advertised as 5X114 anyway...?! Maybe using a google'd pic for the first photo, but at least try to find a pic of wheels with the same amount of studs... If it is someone on here, I'd like to think they would know a bit more about their car than the ad suggests...?
  9. I've got a Draper micrometer adjust torque wrench. Mid range price, top quality. http://www.toolstop.co.uk/draper-30357-3001a-1/2-drive-ratchet-torque-wrench-40-210nm-or-30-154lb/ft-p9870 Best I've had. Not sure if this is the cheapest place, but try googling "Draper part No.3001A"
  10. Absolute LEG-END of a car. It was one of 4 UK time-attack cars that were invited to take part in a round of the Jap time-attack. IIRC it suffered an engine failure, only to have another (albeit standard spec) 3S-GTE that another team lent them installed overnight! Set some pretty good times considering!
  11. It's all good though, we all like a bit of cross breeding anyway!
  12. Easy now... bet you said that all in one breath, didn't you? :o I like 'em all too. Pretty sure most of us on here do. I could say something like if you go jap things look a little different - SS1 138bhp just a quick as G7 140, SS3 198bhp probably quicker than a G7 190... But that would be argumentative. Not to mention childish. So I won't. Ooops.
  13. Yep, tried every which way going. I've got a 3-arm puller which is fine on the majority of wheels. Really need a 2-arm jobbie though as there's some weird architecture going on with the wheels frame. Its a pretty cheap casting as it goes too, so I'm a bit hesitant to lever on most of it! Having another go on sunday so have 2 days to make a 2 arm-puller. Spose it keeps me out of mischief...
  14. X2 above Sound like the hard way - but trust me when I speak from experience & say if mr t was kind enough to give you a fuel pump, you might as well use it...
  15. no, no, you missunderstand... That was my unnecessarily ample schlong causing me some balance problems! Just to clarify, the oil went on the steering wheel nut, not the schlong...
  16. Thats why Mr T had to make excuses for the gen 7... "Celica - It looks fast" General public... "shame its not!" Still a good ad though! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7xu-LdnIe8
  17. did I mention i charge extra for soiled pantaloons...?
  18. yep, defo MR2 roadster. Shame its got all its mountings broken too cos I was after a cheap n/s one.
