My car internal organs still in pieces after i ripped out the speakers + stereo.

Halford gave up on me after my 3 visits.

Thy recommend: Car Audio in Burnley

+ some other place in lumb lane, bradford.

Anyone used thm or can recommend?

What's the problem? A club member might be able to help. I used to fit all my own stereos and sound systems years ago, although my knowledge is very basic and probably out of date by now I'd be happy to try and help......saves you a few quid.

Its a simple problem really, just inept me with my no-existent DIY skills (or SODs law rules my world), this it the problem (This is also the PM to u, mate Silver Surfer):

I just want to replace my Gen4's stereo (single to double-Din).

Then replace all then speakers (front has 4, 2 3.25"? and 2 base-reflectors?) + 2 at the rear (now ripped out yet).

PLUS all speaker wiring.

The issue started here - and cannot:

1. Determine correct size speakers - DOH :-(

2. A good speaker setup (what size and type for my car)

3. Who can source good speakers of these SMALL sizes

You dont need to go all the way across to burnley mate, I can think of a few local to me. Have a look round online.

Just dont expect to do this on the cheap, its going to be around 1k if you want a full system install including wiring, HU remodelling, speaker install & all parts.

Nothings free, break it down for an average setup for you if you want.

HU - £300 minimum for a decent one with satnav built in, more if your not buying it off ebay.

Speakers (front 2 + 2 tweeters) - £200

Speakers (rear speakers assuming 6x9) - £150

Wiring - £50

Thats £700 already without including any labour & the alterations required going from single to double din.

If you want to do it by yourself, it will be alot cheaper mate.

That's OK, I already bought a double-din Alpine for £70 (normal stereo, not touchscreen)

Glup! That much - maybe I forgot to mention, I am only after a decent branded one.

So,happy with Halfords Alpine 2-way 10cm for £30.

But, that's the problem, I do not know if this is the correct size, and if a 3-way can fit into a 10cm hole?

That was my plan, but will see really.....

I really want to go into a Car Audio shop and pick the budget (but branded speakers+wiring) and then see how much to include installation...

That's what I did Wayne , took me car to an audio fitter, who sold me my Kenwood single Din head unit and front speakers cost was speakers Kenwood 3 cm £ 40 head unit £120 plus about £60 ish fitting

Amping? Can I assume that means an EXTERNAL AMPLIFIER?

Yes, I just want a bog-standard setup - but want better speakers to fit in the existing holes thats all.

I have the assumption ANYTHING is better than the standard car manufacturer speakers (even the HU).

I know the Alpine are almost the cheapest I can find - but still better than the originals in the car?

You are on the right track with your alpine wishlist -- renowned as some of the best gear on the Market

And for what you want from your system not exactly bank breaking.

I know no idea about car stereos, just what I come across on the internet or from the grapevine.

So, really working towards my budget based on what I can buy for the cheapest Alpine system I can find - for now only at Halfords.

But, even Halfords are limited to the smallest at 10cm (which might be too big) and there is no smaller 3-way or sub-woofer.

I only decided to change the HU <- only knew what this meant a couple of weeks ago! ....because the existing single-din is quite worned now (hard to change songs ).

Also, the driver speaker crackles like mad (and when I took it out it was ripped).

I also read bod standard manufacturer speakers were more like paper - which mine was.

And the alpine speakers in Halfords (10cm for 2, 2-way speakers) were only £26...were much better quality material......so I decided to replace the whole system.

I have (and this is a rough guess from what people and Halfords has said):

1. 4 speakers at the front: Passenger(3.25" + 4" base deflector), Driver (the same)

2. Rear Speakers: No idea - not seen them (but could be 4" or 5" each side)

So what I have read, I would like 3 way speakers at the front (super tweeter, tweeter, mid-range), plus ONE 4" subwoofer

Rear, again 3 way speakers for my passengers.

I am not wanting the loudest or the best for the driver.

I just want a good quality system both for myself and my 2 kids in the back - they love mu songs and I do not want to put sub-woofers in the back and bang out their ear drums.

The only problem I have so far:

1.No one can determine the size of my speakers yet

2. Finding someone who can source such SMALL speakers for 3way and sub-woofers

3. What is the best setup with my car's layout (2way, 3way, mid, sub, woofer, etc)?

Crude layout of my car:

Driver: 3.25" ON DASH faces Driver; 4" FACES THE DOOR (hence useless)

Passenger:

3.25" ON DASH faces passenger; 4" ON DASH (in SAME BOX as 3.25") faces floor

Rear:

In side panel faces passenger x2

So what you want is a set of component speakers in the front

And speakers in th rear.

Can I suggest that you Take off th door card measure across the speaker recess to see what the measurements are on the mounting points.

Make a template and take it to halfords to see what speakers fit

Once you get out of the " must replace with same " mindset and get your " that will work with a bit of fettling " head on

Your on a winner

What I would suggest is a set of front components with passive crossover and tweeter like alpine 17c .

And a set of 2 or 3 way components in the rear .

Just with these relatively cheap speakers you will be blown away by the difference in sound quality from standard .

I have two 8 inch kevlar coned subs you can have if you like. Need a box and amp for them though.

Alpine systems are great but there budget range is cheap for a reason. No im not having a laugh mate, you can pay a lot more than that. Cheap 6x9 speakers are renowned to crack and the seals break down quickly. Same with wires, cheap wires means distorted sound quality. I'm not trying to put you off or anything, I just don't want to see you spend a decent amount of cash and end up with a system that you think is just alright and you arnt happy with.

Ha ha ha - u THINK like me!

I took out the front speakers (all four of them) and took them to Halfords.

1st visit - they guys said it was 4" and 5" - but best to see Audio consultant at Halfords.

2nd visit - sees the Audio Consultant at Halfords and he confirms 4" - then when I got him to measure, he admits it LESS THAN 4".

And since they don't have ANYTHING less than 4" or the screw fittings that I took off the speakers - he advises me to go to a specialist.

Mate - my speakers are NOT in the door, but IN THE DASH!

I think this speaker was put in by a previous owner (a base reflector used to be here. ie a flat piece of soft material).

But the replacement speaker must be useless, since it is BETWEEN the end of the dash AND the door - hence cannot hear anything! )

I am really appreciate your input - this is why this is a great forum - all the members here are very very helpful

I would love to take those speakers off u - but I am really rubbish at DIY (took me 4hrs to put up a shelf !!!) so less work means less problems and less money required. Certainly do NOT want a external amp - read they are pricey as well as needing to find somewhere to fix to and checking enough power for it as well.

I totally understand where u are coming from, but there is no way I can find the money or justify £1000.

Maybe if I bought a £500+ touchscreen satnav - which I initially wanted, but as money was needed elsewhere, I have now bought a £70 Alpine instead this:

So, pls keep inputting into this thread, the more replies I get, the more informed decision I can make
