  1. We have clear details on the advantage of the MSDT P157 cams at last.

The below is a back to back graph, same car, same engine, same everything with the exception of addition of the MSDT P157 cams and a map to suit.

At points we see an additional 14lb/ft of torque and 10hp. Very happy to finally have clear detail with the only change being the cams. Lovely

Also can’t complain at 221Chp from a standard CR engine.

  2. End of a slow season that ended on a high. Winter plans will be underway as of Thursday this week.

#105 has had a hard life and although it has seen significant upgrading over the years one thing that has had little love it the shell and body. To be honest she's starting to look a little weathered, tired and battle scarred, thats the aim for this winter, full body restoration.

To that end she will be stripped to a bare shell, every tab, stub, unused bracket, none structural piece of steel will be removed before heading off to be acid dipped to remove every trace of paint (probably 3-4 layers in some places), heavy underseal and corrosion should there be any. Any repairs required will be undertaken and then into paint. No exciting livery change but she will be painted as a base in Toyota Super white, accent colour TBC. Interior, underside and engine bay will be painted in same metallic grey as EvoMoo. Then it will be built back up ready to race by End of Feb for early season testing. Lets hope we can keep the timeline this year.

The HC engine will be rebuilt to race another day and will be back in the car for the start of the season.

That will do for now I guess.

  3. I guess you could call this a Black Friday deal; fortunate timing is all. I have had an order for a couple of manifolds for an NA build and supply to a couple of NA race cars. This being the case I took the decision to build the first ever BATCH of manifolds to help bring down the cost which I can pass on. As always there is nothing in this for me other than to provide a quality product to our community. Price is still on the high end but as always I wont compromise so it really is the best product it can be.

    Price is 955.20GBP inc VAT

As with all aftermarket manifolds other modifications to your system will have to be made. You will require a 2.5" mid-pipe to mate to the Manifold outlet diameter. The manifold will come with a v-band connector, the second half of the v-band will need welding to your existing mid-pipe to make the connection.

    Any questions or enquiries welcome.

  4. Good Morning CCUK.

Still coming down from the weekend, think I will be living off that win for the rest of the year. So back to this thread and the story so far, those following the general updates to the MSDT thread will have seen that I blew my race engine (with the P157 cams). Its a long story as to why this happened but I will try and tell it.

It starts on the date of the first dyno, somewhat unfortunately very early into the session we noted the cars onboard wide-band wasnt reading as it should and making the feedback to the ECU correctly to make the fueling trims. It was decided that to still get something out of the session we would zero it out and make a safe fixed map (not ideal) using the tail pipe method. This of course means that you can never maximize the map or the session.

So we went ahead an ran the session very successfully netting a peak 197 WHP a nice 232.26 crank HP and lovely power curves. I havnt posted on here as yet but I think are on FB, I am sure some of you will have seen, will update later.

Following this we knew that we were running very rich to keep things safe and 200WHP was easily possible with the wide-band doing its thing. This is why I didnt want to release what felt like a lower than achievable figure and was excited about releasing a figure over 200WHP. Moving on (and the reference to 'Tuesday') I had a wide-band ordered and planned on a 'check' dyno run before I had to run in anger on with Wednesday. This was all setup ready to go and the dyno I had chosen had some technical issue for which they spent the whole morning on the phone to Germany, the run never happened, very depressing

Wednesday was a blast, the engine had never felt stronger. Friday at Silverstone saw me turn some installation laps, netting a 1s quicker time than ever before and the engine felt amazingly strong. On lap 4 of my second stint i started getting some smoke from the rear but wasnt sure if it was just spray from the wet track, on the next lap the cabin started filling with smoke (oily smelling smoke), with my hand hovering over the fire extinguisher pull i pulled off track. On early examination it looks like I have wiped the piston rings and bores and it pressurized the head forcing oil out of every available orifice dowsing the engine bay in oil. So this engine is done for now and I wont get my 200WHP graph for some time while it is rebuilt.

On the plus side I have achieved something very cool, I have achieved my own personal goal, expanded my own knowledge and designed a set of  PROVEN cams (and a set of stage 2's by accident/necessity) at least as good (it could be argued better) as anything else out there for the 2ZZ. As before I expect the P157 are completely useless to anyone but me or someone racing a celica, a crazy expensive endevour some including myself may say. But I also say.... why the hell not.

If I knew when I started this project what I know now would I have undertaken this experiment? No. But would I now put any other cams in my engines? No. The P157's are unbeatable on my setup, the accidental stage 2's matched the best any other manufacturer had to offer (on my setup).

    Happy YES

Edit: I forgot to mention - the spare engine dropped in for the race that was standard with the exception of valves, springs and the MSDT stage 2's made 182WHP.

750MC - Birkett Relay Class A Winners Se7en Motorsports.Arghhhhh amazing ‘bucket list’ life goals stuff! 6hrs of fantastic clean racing in all weather condition at Silverstone.

Hope you are ready for a read as with every good outcome there is a story.... and this is a story with many participants.

Firstly to the drivers, Lee Mabbett, Toru Watanbe,Sarah Hobson and other behind the scenes members (Bri, Ben, Ollie, Mick et al) who were on hand through the day and online supporting us a big thank you. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish and a pleasure to share it with you all.

Next up matt_Shawyer who not only being a great friend is also mine and my sons racing idol and driver coach. Matt is integral to MSDT and progress I have made as a driver over that 5 years. Second to none for driver training. Legend.

For the MSDT Celica it was a story that started Thursday morning during the pre-race test with a very unfortunate and rare engine failure. Fearing doomed to sitting out the Birkett a call to Se7en (who moved all obstacles and mobilised to Silverstone immediately) resulted in an engine change on site and the car was up and running again by 10pm or so. There would always be a piece of the puzzle that would trip us up, if we couldn’t have the engine tuned (different spec) she would be going nowhere. At 1am the MSDT Celica was at 2zz specialist tuner Race Dyno Tuning where Will Hinchcliffe pulled a crazy late one for us and come 3am the car was optimised and loaded back up to return to Silverstone. What a legend for doing that for us and saving our race weekend. Thank you Will.

Race day itself wash uneventful, and that’s intended in a very positive manner. Things just worked, the team clicked and worked seamlessly together. The 45 minute stints were what we were all used to so suited us and the cars range. Undoubtedly endurance is where the Celica platform excels, and the changeable conditions really helped us. Strong stints from every driver saw us creaping up the order with some fantastic racing battles with the huge array of differing machinery.

Moving on to personal thanks, not withstanding those already mentioned I would like to thank Alpha Perfomance Fabrication who have been a long standing supporter of MSDT and bring our Celica development designs to life in the most exquisite manner. Mike and team have been along side us for 5 years which has seen us move from an almost standard car to where she sits today as a Birkett winner. All our fabrication work has been undertaken by these masters of metal.

Most importantly the biggest thanks goes to my wife Charlotte Traviss and family for putting up with me and all the drama and time racing puts on us. Without their support none of this would have been possible. Love you all Million!

There are many other players in this story, many not mentioned, but they are numerous and I hope it’s appreciated by all how much goes into achieving a result like this. Thank you everyone.

    There we have it people.
    BIRKETT WINNERS

  6. As we may have gathered Tuesday came and went with little to show for it.

It’s a longer story than I can type but a replacement lambda sensor wouldn’t talk to the ecu meaning we were getting no feedback, the map reverted to a default and became essentially static with no compensations. Game over for the day.

As a plus it was safe to run so I did go enjoy myself with @Bumblebeeat Cadwell on Wednesday.

It’s torture keeping it to myself, I want to share this so badly but I am forcing myself to hold on until Tuesday where hopefully I will be able to make an even better reveal.

    • Haha 1
  8. Now... would anyone like the see the most perfect set of NA curves they have ever seen?

Yes I have deliberately cut off the scaling... to be revealed when finished. Cheeky I know. Haha

So happy with this I can’t tell you. Finally the development comes together, the system works together, all the work is proven and it’s a big relief... as a bonus it sounds ridiculous  in a really good way.

:o:drool: will they be in for the relay? Nice one Dave

Oh yes they will... and to spoil the suspense the final graph won’t be released until Tuesday next week (the day before cadwell) as thats when the next piece of the puzzle comes into play and everything will be finalised.

  9. Dip... what dip...

One issue solved. I’ve already won on 2 fronts today. Cams havnt eaten the engine and they have succeeded in removing the mid range torque dip. On track the car will already be quicker.

Those with eagle eyes will spot the the blue line already traces the most power we have ever made all signs are positive at this stage.

  10. It will not be long before #105 is back on the dyno with the MSDT P157 race cams installed.

Its been a painful winter with manufacturing issues, engine damage, rebuilds and a painful summer with COVID knocking all racing into the weeds. But... we will be back racing again at the Birkett relay (6hr endurance) on the 24th October, this has given me the push required to get the cams in and make the most of what I have available.

It’s a great team event and we will be fielding 4x Celica’s to battle the Honda and MR2 contingent along with the crazy fast stuff like radicals, Moslers and the likes. I will drop a link to the YouTube live feed in here closer to the time.

I have couple of test days as a warm up, cadwell on the 21st with @Bumblebeeand Silverstone GP on the 23rd. Let’s get after it!

  11. The big ones are in. 2nd time lucky, that’s not a thing but it has to be.

Will require another dyno session, low cam lobe are the same on the P157 as the, let’s call them the MSDT stage 2’s that were in there so should be no drama getting her up and running, the map up until switch over should remain the same.

To take at least one positive the first failure; MSDT has happily created a set of proven lower lift stage 2 cams capable of producing 229bhp with supporting mods.

Hoping the P157’s can cap that.

Can you remind us what mods are in the solid and dotted lines, is it right this is with stage 2 cams and then your planning the revised msdt cams to come, sorry if I have that wrong.

Only differance are the crower maxi light rods and a slightly longer intake length and larger area filter. Cams and a new development ex manifold to come in the coming months.

For now I need to get some miles under my belt  and on the engine in anticipation of the remaining races of the season. Hoping for Silverstone GP race in August but have to get myself the championship dyno check done first, trying to organise that this coming week.

  13. There we are...

End of last season - Dotted

    This tune - Solid

I am told that the new dyno firmware has knocked around 6hp off all graphs since the update but I’ll ignore that and go with exactly what we see. So we have 4HP gain peak but 10HP if we don’t ignore the dyno change. Let’s say 4HP to underplay things.

So we gained some 5HP & a 5+ lb/ft across most of the rev range, the dip remains (doh). I’m happy with that for now.

More to come when my next developments come along. Watch this space

  14. No tuning done yet, first pull 189bhp at the wheels...thats 5 up on the last tune without touching anything. Running slightly lean so some work to do.

Took a while to get going as there was a firmware update on the ecu to do and an idle ignition update to put in.

I will update the thread as news comes in.
