hawker
As back boxes typically do not tend to rust away due to water/salt etc being chucked up onto it from the road, but primarily rot from the inside out due to acidic water vapour build-up over time, I've heard some people actually drill small holes at both ends of the box in order to drain this nasty stuff off and hence prolong its life. Does anyone here do this? If so, would this have emissions/noise implications? Wouldnt it possibly cause even more damage knowing its possible for more crap on the roads to find its way inside the system? rpsmith79
I'd rather just buy a stainless steel back box rather than drill holes in one And yes, i would imagine it would make a horrible noise with holes drilled in it
Dave Poole
I once drilled a hole in a backbox on my focus due to it been full of water. As soon as i gave it some beans on the day i did it. It caused the middle box to explode in half.... It didnt like the drainage hole at all so i advise agaisnt it lol

Alistair_GT
I thought holes/leaks in the exhaust system were an MOT failure? The quicker it rusts away the quicker you've got a good excuse to throw it in the bin and buy a proper exhaust - a stainless one.
