  1. And this is, in my opinion, why most coupe's seem to fail.

That little thing is expected to have over 205bhp giving it more power than both the last Celica and the GT86.

Which is by no means something limited to Toyota, any company that has produced a coupe recently seems to think that the body shape alone will sell the car

"It looks fast, doesn't need to be fast" appears to be the line from car manufacturers.

  2. I was told that the "lull" before VTEC or Lift (Honda's have it too and I found the VTEC kick on a H22a is way more noticeable than later, K series engines or Toyota's 2ZZ) was due to the way the engine engages the high cams it draws a small amount of power from the engine hence the lull. Not sure I agree with this one as it's transfer of oil or oil pressure and while the energy to do that is has to come from somewhere I wouldn't think it would be that noticeable.

I've also heard that the engine is made to "back off" slightly so it can engage the high cams and, from what I have seen of diagrams explaining VTEC, this sounds more credible but I am just as likely to believe that manufacturers introduce it intentionally to make the increase in power more pronounced to the driver and therefore produce a larger grin on the face :D which, being honest, is the only thing I do understand about VTEC/Lift.:sofa:

And :P to comparing the 2ZZ to the H22a... Ok, so I'm still a bit of a Honda fanboy, or just view the past with rose tinted specsavers

Coupes are about fashion. I would expect to see the same drop off in sales figures for similar coupe models from other manufacturers for that reason alone.

Agreed, Motoring journalists are always citing the Hot Hatch as being the death of the Coupe, the coupe just no long being fashionable for people that wanted a cheap performance car. It didn't help that the coupes were often based on a sensible four door family saloon.

Honda's Prelude (Killed off after the 5th Gen) With the 5th Gen Honda had, apparently, listened to their customers who wanted a larger boot and a cheaper car. The result was that it sold worse than the 4th Gen.

Ford's Probe and Cougar (Of course you could blame the Probes failure on Alan Partridge :D )

    Vauxhall's Calibra

As far as I know these were all flops which, imo, was because they didn't offer anything you couldn't get with a more practical saloon. I am also pretty sure all of these are based on a four door saloon, Accord, Modeo and Vectra and in the end the saloon models had higher performance engines (at least in the UK market) so there wasn't really anything better about these Coupes except appearance and the Hot Hatch had already stolen the coupe market for affordable performance car.

I've forgotten what my point was or if I ever had one...
...Hmmm I might need a distraction..

  4. The demand on GT86's might go up as the BRZ makes an appearance in Fast8.

Although I'm not really sure what that franchise does for car sales as the driving set pieces in them generally hold about the same real world value as fight scenes in The Matrix.

At moment I see more GT86/BRZ's on the road than I do Gen7 GT's so I am happy with my Celica (I like having a car that I know I am unlikely to see another of next to me at a set of lights) but the 86 does have "My next car" written all over it.

This has to be the best autotrader advert for a car ever

or at least the best I've read :)

Only problems are that you also need a new mobo and DDR4 memory. Which adds up when upgrading. And the CPU coolers aren't all compatible with the AM4 socket.

Looks like even the basic Ryzen 7 beats your i5 with a similar margin: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2284&cmp[]=2970

Yeah that is nearly always a given with CPU upgrades, normally means an entire system.

I'm not entirely convinced that the gap is as big as that for gaming. My i5 is running at 4.5ghz and and few (if any) games really take full advantage of multiple cores and hyperthreading. So I expect the Ryzen to be better, especially in more modern games but I doubt it's currently enough for me to think "Must Have!" at least, not just yet :D

However, the fact that AMD are winning everywhere, not just in the Gaming market (where they last had dominance) is a real turn up and massive feather in their metaphorical cap. Faster and using less power, how can the hardware manufacturers not take note?

(erm... Maybe we should stop this thread hi jack before a mod tells us off)

Got the 1700 for the low power, relatively speaking. Finally an AMD CPU worth spending some money on. :D

    The Spec's look good.

I'm still running an O/C'd i5 4690K which is doing all I need of it but it is great to see AMD produce something to make Intel take note.

Historically I've always been AMD biased for CPU's but of late it made little sense other than cost.

Did they tell you how to look after it mate. There's dos and donts with professionally polished stuff?

Snap? hmm, more like I'm a blatant copycat :D After seeing yours I decided I needed something like that in my engine bay.

Umm, No they didn't give me any special instruction so please share if you have some :)

Also I am guessing that the polishes that did yours used something special to get into their important little places, and it wasn't a Q-Tip cotton bud.

Total cost for all 3 parts was £120 which I thought was pretty good considering the amount of hours I would have to put in to get anything even remotely close.

  8. Are you after better visibility or prettier lights?

Although a higher K rating means a brighter white/blue light it does not necessarily translate to better visibility for the driver, especially in adverse conditions like fog.

When I had stock lights I used lights with 4200K for a whiter (and better looking) light (apparently anything over 5000k isn't road legal but I don't know how anyone would check that and plenty on are using 5000k + bulbs) but with the aftermarket ones I have now, I have to use Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited bulbs (3300k) just to get anything like a stock headlight with standard bulbs can produce.

They do, they really do lol  How did you guess?

Something about that sort of person that needs to make disparaging comments about another's property they always seem to drive Audi's or BMW's (and to a less degree, Merc's)

That isn't saying all Audi and BMW drivers are like this, just that this sort of person seems to be drawn to those cars.

Couple of the guys at work call my car the kinder egg car as it looks so tiny because she's so much lower than all the other boring cars in the car park.  Get many 'witty' comments about whether I ate the chocolate egg first before putting her together and did I read the instructions etc.

Can I hazard a guess that these guys drive German cars?

  11. Thank you for this. I have no problem getting to the Panel (maybe a little trouble in remembering to reconnect the Cig Light/Charger)

I had already ordered T4.2 as they seemed to be the right size but from what you've said I may have ordered the wrong size, oh well. I'll get some T4's as well.

  12. My turn, I guess, since I am Honda lover and not really a great fan of the Celica (but not really a Hater) Here are my thoughts on your complaints but comparing them with the Honda I previously owned, loved and didn't f***ing look after

Long list mate - compare to my old accord - As had been said before, A family Saloon vs a Coupe, it's not really fair to compare, you've also not mention what "flavour" of Accord. My last Honda was 5th Gen Prelude Type S so my comparisons are little more even.

    1. Noisy inside - Mine too, mostly parcel shelf and a cheap aftermarket exhaust, before that, just the parcel shelf. My Prelude was never particularly quiet, although it was nearly a decade older but, Oh, that exhaust note... <3

    2. Not as comfy - Not much in it for me, The GT is stiffer than my Prelude but also handles better. I can live with that, I bought a cheap sports coupe. However you had an Accord, Even in Type R spec the Accord is still a family Saloon and is going to offer more comfort.

    3. Build quality - materials crap - Agree with this, even compared to Honda. But I bought a cheap sports coupe so I'm not crying too much over that, well, a little at times.

    4. Engine  - Vtec rules - no issues at all - Technically it's VVTLI as VTEC is Honda's trade mark however I really miss the VTEC scream of the H22A in my Type S but, after fitting (and finally leaving it there) the Japspeed exhaust I seem to have better performance or at least equal to what it was before the Blitz went on (Yay! Won't be selling the Blitz as it's clearly f***ed imo) but I would still take the H22a over the 2ZZ any day, just for sound alone :P

5.Lots issues - Yeah, I have those too. Bucket loads. I did start seeing a therap... Oh wait, we're still talking about the cars...

a] not working passenger window switch - Everyone else answered this. Things fail with use, I wouldn't be ragging on a Car or Manufacturer about a faulty switch

b]  tailgate struts - Does seem to be a weak point from what I've seen on hear. Not really had any issues there yet, myself.

c] alternator belt -  Things wear, even on Hondas!

d] Clutch - lots issues !!! - See above. Pretty certain they don't come that way from the factory.

e] Poor driver position - can't find comfy - Not had this issue in either the Celica or the Prelude, both very similar but then I didn't come from a Family Saloon to a Sports Coupe.

f] Heating on driver side not working properly - A fault with the car sure but not a design fault.

g] cd changer location in boot - Not on mine. The Sony Head unit that came with mine (Factory option) plays music from USB or my phone via B/T even DVD's... And the reversing camera! I love my reversing camera. Shame there's no built in Satnav but still way better than my Type S came with. However the Prelude S Spec (Arguably the model below the Type S) did come with a built in Satnav, although you needed to get around Japan and could understand Japanese... Erm.. I had a point to make, I think? Oh yeah, Reversing camera FTW!

h] can't be ask to list it all - means many more. - Brakes? You missed the Spongy Brakes! There'd be no arguements there but I also recall people fitting Honda Legend brakes to Preludes and Accords so the whole Avensis brake swapping thing isn't anything new or unique to the Celica.

The things that I find most annoying about the car are generally petty but the sad fact was, the car just doesn't make me smile like my Prelude used to and I was looking at getting rid of it (Then I realised I didn't like anything else in my budget and importing another Prelude Type S or S Spec would cost around £13k) but it seems that you've bought entirely the wrong sort of car.

Have you looked to see what similar money can buy you in the 2 door coupe market? Because I couldn't find much when I was looking.

  13. Nissan Micra 1.0 Si

    Toyota Starlet GT Turbo

    Toyota MR2 GT Turbo T-bar

Toyota Celica GT Four ST205 (310bhp track car)

Toyota Celica GT Four ST205 (road car)

Since the Celicas I then had the following:

    Mitsubishi Evo 6

Subaru Impreza STi Type RA V5

    Mitsubishi Evo 4 (420bhp)

    Toyota Glanza V (280bhp)

    Current:

    Subaru Impreza STi V3

Engine gone pop so currently off road, thinking about getting an Evo 5 to complete the set lol

    You had a 280bhp Glanza!?!

That must of been "interesting" to drive :o
