  1. just helped my mum with getting new avon z5 and, although she never makes 50+, even she notices the stopping distance and sound levels have improved from 4 budget tyres. im a firm believer that mid range is the lowest level of tyre anyone should by. ive had a nasty encounter with budgets but since i delved into premium and mid range, i will never go back. never mind cornering holding abilities, sidewall rigidity, progressiveness. the only justification any one needs is : is your life worth saving a couple of pounds for? i wouldnt put my life in 4 points of contact between the floor and 4 cheap bands of rubber.

  2. Falken Ziex ZE912

Make and Model plus size of Tyre: Falken Ziex ZE912 195/50 R15

    Celica owned: Civic COupe EJ8

Type of driving: A + B road abuse

Type of driver: Get there as fast as possible

Miles covered so far and wear rate: 5-6k Fronts worn out

Dry use: Good. Sticks to the road well but not the ultimate in grip. Have never had any pant wetting moments approaching bends too fast, tyres have always held up admirably.

Wet use: Very good with standing water even down to the wear markers. Damp roads handling is even better than dry IMO but really wet is slightly worse, not so much cornering but traction and braking seem to be affected more.

Snow / Ice use: Didn't really get to find out. They do NOT LIKE GRITTED DRY ROADS at all though.

Noise: Average, They don't squeal like piggies when cornering hard or under braking. Rolling noise, hard to say I have a loud exhaust.

Overall opinion / comments / strengths / weaknesses:

A Good all round tyre. Cornering performance remains consistent throughout most driving conditions, in the wet braking tends to suffer a little bit but not massively. Performance remains cosnistent evn to the last mile. Even when my fronts were down to slicks they would still handle standing water and damp roads with ease, but traction and braking had definitely taken a hit.

Worn the fronts out in 5kish, but I do have neg ative camber and tracking was miles out - that said wear was more even than expected. I have replaced with the same again.

Sidewalls are quite soft so a comfortable tyre.

Price paid and from where: £55 a corner from ebay tyre dealer based in Warrington. Fitted locally.

Rating out of 10: 8/10 Consistent and moderately priced, I have replaced with the same again.

i've previously had them on my saxo which i would personally disagree a lot on. granted, with some heating up, the dry performance can hold it's own with some pushing with good progressive characteristics and extreme durability. i ran them ragged for 12k and there's still 4mm? how i dont know but they are great bang for buck. wet i would rate similarly but cold? i dont rate these at all.

    Maragoni Mythos

Make and Model plus size of Tyre: Maragoni Mythos 205/45 r17

    Celica owned: Celica Gt 06

Type of driving: A road maniac, motorway pensioner, city youth

Type of driver: like the lift and sequel at the limits, otherwise, i like my fuel economy, as low as it is

Miles covered so far and wear rate: new set, 500 miles in

Dry use: slipping a bit and soft sidewalls, wheel spin from stationary, be it dry or damp at 3k...

Wet use: hit standing water with no drama, never felt light. cornered not so hard and the car got incredibly twitchy.

Snow / Ice use: no idea!

    Noise: 70db, not quiet, tolerable

Overall opinion / comments / strengths / weaknesses:

i cant knock these entirely as i got this car in the cold and these are summer tyres. however, i expect these to perform better. grip in the dry is not outstanding, i do spin a lot in first and the car beeps a lot when i hammer corners, trc off. i feel it rolls a bit as well but at 35psi (max50) i thought it was alright...wet, surprisingly, holds it s own in flat roads and standing water but around a medium bend,30mph, the light was again blaring frantically and the car felt like it was skipping over the road. i definitely know i wasnt going that fast as ive gone as fast in continental SC3 and those got around without a pickle.

my rating applies only for the winter and what i've experienced thus far. i will post again when i've had a go in the heat and the conditions these tyres were originally made to perform in.

Price paid and from where: £70. Fitted locally.

Rating out of 10: 5/10 not impressed but solace in current conditions, keeping an open mind.
