  1. The MOT rule is open to miss-interpretation for the individual tester, there are some jobsworths out there, if the beam is set correctly, the pattern is correct and the dip pattern is no more than 55 watts (not possible to check and no way of checking) then no reason to fail.

If washers or wipers are fitted on HID lights then they should work, no OEM fitment = no fail, no tester can fail for something that doesn't exist unless it was fitted in the first place.

You can appeal but its not worth it and its a long winded process, find a decent Station that is sympathetic that does the test properly and to the written word.

I was a Tester for 17 years, I often bent the rules but never broke them.

    Loads out there.

If it fails the MOT for HIDs can't you just put the original halogens back in and get it passed if there isn't a retest fee, then when you get home put the HID's back in?

  2. 20 SMD sidelights in, going to put them on the rear number plate lights when I get the 38 SMD ones for the front though. Amazing how much difference it makes for a couple of pound and 5 minute job!

And since I'm currently driving around with one halogen and one xenon (until I get a replacement) because one of the HID bulbs or ballasts was faulty, this is what the standard bulb looks like compared to 4300K, although not so blue in real life

  3. I fitted mine today and they were ok but when I went out to test them at night it looked like they were pointing down too much because I couldn't see further than a few metres infront of me even with the dial thing on the right of the steering wheel at the highest setting. Then after trying to adjust them one of them stopped working when I turned them on. Will have a look again tomorrow when it's light but hopefully I haven't blew the bulb already

Edit: I had a look at the fuse box and found that the fuse had blown so replaced it with another one and it blew it again. So I changed the bulbs around (not the ballasts so they are fine) and it blew the fuse for the other side. Can anyone help me why it seems that one bulb keeps blowing fuses, I have the terminals connected properly

  4. Before someone gets the elderly sign one I thought I'd just post this for the previous challenge

I know it wouldn't have counted cause it's not my Celica and I just screenshotted it, but here is a a Celica next to some famous people. Taken from season 1 episode 6 of The Inbetweeners I just spotted it there :)

  5. I think I might be the only one that hasn't come across the "It's a girls car" comment.

I think the cloth seats are much comfier than the leather

Ithink some people who don't know much about cars must see a G7 as a girlie shape for some reason, but then there's others who mistake it for a Subaru

My 40 year old cousin said Celica's are more suited to girls "because they look good in them". Girls also look good in Lamborghini's but that doesn't make them girls cars ;)

The other comment about being a girls car wasn't actually said to my face, but someone told me that's what they thought after seeing it. I've asked a few people if they think my car looks like a girls car and they always say no

  6. Mostly I get compliments but now and again:

    "That's a girls car"

Especially when they don't have a car or own something slower

"It's not as fast as it looks"

Yes, but it's more reliable and economic than it looks

    "It's not comfy/not enough room"

I did not buy this car to please you

Before owning a Gen 7 I would have been delighted to have known someone or be taken in one , why can't some people just appreciate it for being the perfect car that it is

  7. That's really annoying that someone would do that to such a nice car. I have a Gen 7 in the same colour as yours and I scraped mine on my driveway gate quite badly once,.It was right down to the metal and I thought I'd never get it out. I tried T cut colour fast scratch remover for blue which I got from Asda for £5

    http://direct.asda.com/T-Cut-Colour-Fast-Scratch-Remover--Blue/001023898,default,pd.html

I was shocked at how well it worked after rubbing it and leaving it then going back and doing it again a few times. Now you can't tell the paint was ever scraped (still has a slight dent though). My scrape was different to your keying but mine was definitely down to the metal and it fixed it so should work for yours too

This was mine before and after and oh, promise I'm not a salesman for T cut :D

  8. When I'm going down a hill or need to stop with no one behind me, I've started to coast more often by going in neutral to gradually come to a stop to try and save fuel and the brake pads but haven't really noticed any changes in fuel consumption

I've read in some places on the internet that coasting actually uses more fuel than keeping the car in gear because more modern cars have a fuel cut off or something?

Can anyone clear this up, for a gen 7 more specifically

  9. I always loved the looks of the gen7 but while I was married I had to do the sensible and boring 5 door family hatch thing so never imagined I would actually own one some day. When that marriage ended I did think about buying a celica but bottled it and bought a 207 GT diesel instead. Not sure why I did that really! I suppose I wanted something with sporty looks but low running costs. I learned that compromise is not always a good thing when it comes to cars and after a year of dull motoring sold the pug for a 2 door coupe. A celica then? No. Again I thought about it but ended up buying something cheaper, a puma. I got the puma because my best mate has one and I was completely hooked on the way it drove. Say what you like about them, those things really put a smile on your face. Kept the puma for a year until I just couldn't bear the sight of rusty wheel arches any longer and decided the time was right to buy that celica I had always wanted. At first I was looking for a 140 but after reading the forum and checking insurance and running costs decided on the Tsport instead. The lure of lift was too much to resist!

So far so good and I still love the car. It's been great to own but has cost me a bit more than I was expecting as maintenance was clearly not a priority for the previous owner. Anyway, hopefully all sorted now so I'm looking forward to another couple of years of fun ownership.

I really wanted a puma for my first car, then one turned up at my local garage a couple of years ago. They wanted £2600 and probably the same again to insure it because I was 18 at the time. I still love the way they look when I see one but it turns out the 1.7 puma was the same insurance group as the 140 celica. It's hard to believe how much difference a couple of years made as I managed to get a nice 140 and insure it for about the same price as the price of just that puma 2 years ago

  10. Brother had a Gen 1 2 ltr ST I think. Was ok but didn't set my heart a flutter. Brother in law had gen 2 & 3. Though they were quite nice. Sister in law had gen 7 and I always liked the lines but with family / mortgage etc a nice one nearly new like hers was about 8k, and out of my price bracket. Had one or two special cars over the years, a TR4A IRS and an audi quattro were favourites. Having been through a tough time a few years back I thought I would be "sensible" and get a 2 ltr Mondeo. Most tedious irritating piece of poop it has ever been my displeasure to own.

Last year both my lads were pratting about in Clio supersports. Not my kind of deathtrap really but they were having fun. Then one blew up. The eldest was skint and came crying to bank of dad. Mum was always allergic to money, other than mine. Needed to find summat sporty but cheap and relaible.

Always thought Toyaotas pretty bullet proof so got him a gen7 140 with 130 k on it for £1100. Didn't know about the oil issue. However it ran sweet as a nut for a year and he sold it for £1200 when I found him the FTO he had always cherished.

Having driven his 140 I thought it would do everything the Mondeo would re practicality but without the terminal boredom. Didnt do anything about it though as I thought it just needed a bit more Oomph. Then as I was trawling AutoTrader I stumbled across a 190. A what? I thought. Checked it out a bit. Logged on to the club to check it out a bit more spent months hunting down the right one and am delighted with it. Well ok it could really do with a stage 2 cam and another half a litre to go like it looks but it's still a load of car for the money and if Carlberg did car clubs, I think this would be it, apart from over officious moderators. lol. luv ya really Cravo.x

Oh and Smart move Alex, delayed gratification is smart. Buying a status symbol is to buy something you dont want with money you havent got to impress people you dont like. That is dumb.

I won't lie, the looks of the 140 Gen 7 were the main thing that got me interested and I do love the reactions I get from people being impressed but but that's just complimentary to owning such a nice car. I would never buy a car just for the looks though. I wanted a car that looked good in order for me to love it and it was the fact that the reviews I was reading everywhere showed that they were more reliable than the average car, a good compromise between power and fuel efficiency, safer than other cars I could buy for that price and for someone my age the insurance of £660 was a steal when I was getting quoted well over £1000 for a 1 litre at the time of passing my test

  11. Can you remember where you first heard of the Celica, why did you buy one and what's it been like to own?

The first thing I can remember is being about 12 and one of my friends dads had an early Gen 7 in red, I thought it was a Ferrari and asked him how he could afford it

A couple of years ago when I had just passed my driving test I decided I was gonna wait a while and then buy a Celica as my first car after university as they were still expensive and insurance was way too much

To me the Gen 7 is one of the best looking cars ever made but the reliability and amount of car you get for your money really make it almost perfect. This year I had money saved up from the last few years by not owning a car and checked how much they were selling for. I couldn't believe that they had came down so much and also the insurance had came down to £660 from about £5000 I was getting quoted 2 years ago, so after weeks of looking eventually found a good deal on a 7th Gen and bought it

Since I've owned it for the last month I've loved it! All that waiting for a good car instead of diving in and buying a cheap car as soon as I passed my test was worth it. Every car I go in feels raised compared to it :P and I feel like a celebrity when I see peoples reactions of a 20 year old getting out of a G7 (to people that don't know much about cars it looks a lot more expensive and faster than it is). Only thing is I don't like is leaving it parked anywhere because it gets a lot of attention, in case someone damages it when I'm not there (does anyone else worry about this?) especially with a high excess on insurance too :(

  12. I bought my 03 G7 with a tow bar on it and the car seems to be fine at 96k miles

I got it taken off a couple of weeks ago and will try to sell it soon. I still have the receipt from the previous owner who had paid £280 from Toyota fitted but that was including electrics and I've already cut the wire off so they're not any good now

If you're interested I can send you pictures, I'd only be looking for about £50 ONO for just the tow bar with all the bolts but I wouldn't be surprised if you live too far away from me to make it worthwhile (I live near Lockerbie)
