  1. If you don't pinch the hoses you will eventually empty the whole system but once reassembled they will need re-bleeding to remove all the air. The rubber brake hoses will only need pinching to stop the fluid leaking out, pinch then too much and you will risk damaging the hoses. My advice is if you don't have experience working on brakes get someone who does to help you, its one thing you don't wont to get wrong! Dorris

  2. as this is very sad. I would just like to play devils advocate, its not uncommon up here for someone's car to be found burnt out as an insurance job :(

    I only mention this as I have seen the car for sale recently

  3. AC will put more load on your engine but is minimal compared to what the heat is doing to your induction, in fact you will get more negative drag effect over 50mph with your window down then using the AC.

    Higher temperatures effects the power an engine will produce as the fuel injection system is putting much less fuel in to the engine in relation to the less dense hot air then it would do on a cold winters morning and this is much more noticeable with the smaller engines or older engines that may not be as efficient. Even if you buy a rev3 3SGTE it’s not a matter of a just swapping the engines over and job done, there are additional sensors with the turbo, different ECU, intercooler/change cooler to be added and deference in exhaust systems to name but a few and also as others have found out brakes to upgrade too. So as you can see a lot involved in both time and money but if it’s something you want to do for engineering shits and giggles then go for it. Dorris

    as everyone else says though , trundle around with your screen caved in and a 20 inch exhaust knowing theres a bit of a4 that says your ok and a computer out there that says NO then your asking for trouble , cops are joyless bastards at the best of times but expect them to be fighting it out across the bonnet of your car for the glory to royally f@ck you in court , after all an mot inspector has already done the suck through the teeth and slow shake of head , this will be recorded , you can argue all you like that pc. excited isnt an mot inspector (do this at the side of the road and they will tow it so dont do that ) but this will cut no ice considering the cops word is golden and your a scruffy 3 nippled local , driving knowing its a death trap ?, lets call it a nice big fine and a colourfull licence

    so a pre mot inspection is the way to go , also you can moan like a twat if it then goes onto fail the mot as hes already inspected it hasnt he ? so why did he miss it and dontcha think it should pass seeing as you have already looked at it etc etc

    do this 2 months before the mot runs out then present the car 3 weeks later ( once any works that needs doing is done ) for the real mot , take your current certificate to enable 13 months mot on the car

  6. Back in June I taxed my celica, which failed an MOT about a month earlier, using an MOT certificate from October last year. No problem.

    I hasten also to add that after the failed MOT I immediately repaired those things that the car failed on, but I did not take it back for another MOT. No need said DVLA you have a valid MOT from October and you're telling us your vehicle is roadworthy.

    Was that through a post office? But when you put a car through an MOT everything gets put onto the data base but seems odd that DVLA would just take your word for it but then again I believe what DVLA say as they never make mistakes :hysterical:

    The only thing I can think of is, if you do have a current valid MOT then DVLA will ignore the new results but how will that stand with the police and insurance I wonder? Dorris

  7. Ok I’m going to throw a bit of a curve ball out there for you all now.

    MOT systems work by, you take your car to garage, garage tests car, garage passes or fails car, garage then enters record and details on to a national data base for all authorities to access and see!

    Scenario is you have a current MOT and all is fine but 6 month further on you decide for what ever reason to put your car through another MOT but this time it fails. Lets say for arguments sake it fails on emissions but even though your intentions are to sort it ASAP its ok you think as you still have 6 month left on your old MOT.

    A few weeks go by and suddenly you get a blue light in your mirror, you get pulled over and told by the kind officer that according to their record you vehicle is showing that it has a failed MOT and should not be driven on the highway.

    You say that's OK officer the MOT before that is still current and only 6 months old and MOTs are current for 12 months, he replies to what we all know about driving an un-roadworthy vehicle on the public highway.

    Not sure if this will apply to getting your vehicle licence (tax) across the Post Office counter but try and get tax from DVLA with a failed MOT via the phone or internet by just using your V5, ”computer says no!”

    The sheer fact that you need an MOT to be able to drive your vehicle on the public highway and a failed MOT means that you are knowingly driving your vehicle in an un-roadworthy condition and couple this with the fact that you will never hide this fact from the authorities (including insurance people) surely this means just by the mechanics of the way the system works your second MOT supersedes the first?????

    I how I look at it is getting MOTs done really early to see what it might fail on is a waist of time as if it does fail you then cant legally drive it on the road until the records say it is roadworthy again, which means a retest which you have up to 10 days to do before it becomes a complete new test again. Its all to do with how the fuel injection works, the ECU takes information from array of sensors from around the car two of them being throttle position and gear box so if you knock it in to neutral or push the clutch in and then coast down hill with the engine still running, the ECU is being told the engine is sat stationary so there for its on tick over and still supplying fuel to keep the engine running.

    If you are travelling down hill in gear and completely off the peddle with the weight of the car pushing you along then the ECU puts zero fuel into the injectors to give you engine braking, the reason the rev counter shows a reading in this situation is purely the speed of the gear box driving then engine.

    The other option is to turn the engine off but this really isn’t advisable as with the engine off you loose power steering and vacuum for the brake servo.

    These rules only applies to fuel injected petrol engines, CI and carburettor engines play by different rules of automotive engineering. Dorris

  9. First question is why do you want to flush your engine?

    If your engine has been looked after as it should there is no need to flush your engine, however if you have recently purchased the car and there is questions over its servicing intervals then by all means give it a flush, but use either a cheap oil or a flushing oil, using diesel is not cleaver or wise in this day in age with modern engines. 50-60 years ago it might of been common practice but I like to think technology has moved on a bit since then, mind you, you wouldn’t of thought so if you should see some of the guys I have to work with lol.   10. You could use bolts or a length of threaded bar.

    Just watch the lead of the thread once you’ve cut the bolt or bar, the best way is to put a nut on then cut down the side of the nut then file the end of the new stud with a slight chamfer and then when you wind the nut off it will help clean up and damaged thread this will help the new stud thread in to the manifold or head.

    If you tighten 2 nuts together on the end of the stud you can use these to wind the stud into the manifold or head with out damaging the stud especially if you use treaded bar. Dorris

    ie, m5 m6 m7 etc

    mainly the 10mm nuts/bolts

    12mm " "

    14mm " "

    I don't have a gauge to measure the bolts and I want to get stainless ones ordered this week.

    Thats like saying how long is a bit of string :shrug: there are a lot of nuts and bolts on a Gen 6

  12. ok well the new radiator has a 2 year guarantee with it , i dont know how long a new radiator should last and it is a bit more pricier for the pink but for the 5 years (does that mean the coolant will last that long or will you still have to replace every year ) if this is the case then shouldnt i go for the red (toyota say as long as you dont go with the green it should be fine.)

    also is it better to go with the full concentrated one or premix ?

    A radiator should theoretically last the lifetime of the vehicle but due to stone damage and corrosion this is never the case.

    Any anti freeze is better then straight water, anti freeze not only stops your water freezing but it also stops the corrosion inside your engine and it should never be used neat, your average anti freeze normally is mixed 50/50 but its always best to read the instructions first, depending on the mix depends on the freezing point of your coolant but be aware that some will come neat and some will come pre mixed.

    A lot of people will swear by the Toyota life time coolant but I have not come across any evidence supporting any advantages of using this coolant nor have I come across anything supporting that using normal anti freeze is a disadvantage, the only one being the price.

    The reason the manufacturers say to change your coolant periodically is down to the microscopic debris that is produced within your system, which might cause damage to your water pump, but even if you never change your coolant the chances are you will not have your car long enough before the water pump fails. If in doubt go with what the owners or work shop manual says. Dorris
