  1. I have a good set of 14's on an ST i have and i think they are 196/60/14 cant remember the make off hand but they are decent tyres

maybe someone on here who has an ST and is still running steels can help you out

Cheers Brian....I had no idea ST's had 14 inch wheels! Not such a blind cry for help after all!

  2. I know it's not a popular size but some of you may have second cars with this size of tyre fitted.

I'm struggling to find decent 205 or 195 x 60 14" tyres for my Gen 1 ....it's a long time since I've used Michelin, Uniroyal, Dunlop, Goodyear etc. as we have always had 4x4's each and I use whatever comes on them!Same with my van.

I've googled what I want but it just brings up so many names I have no experience of.....

I can get street legal slicks easy enough but don't want to be on a motorway in a rainstorm and have to wait until it stops raining!!

    Any suggestions?

  3. In spite of worrying about being a target I would still report it to the Police to cover yourself if there is any further vandalism or accident where you park it.....they may choose do do nothing about it but at least it's reported and will cover you with your insurance company should they try to claim against you!

A good few years ago my Mum was sat in her and Dad's TA60 Celica when a travelling person ran in to the back of it. It wrecked the boot, rear screen and pillars and almost wrote the car off. The guy was uninsured, had no licence or plate for his wagon and was taken in to custody.

He was let out the next day, no court appearance, just bailed and the Police said they wouldn't be following it up as it would be a waste of their time. They said he would just disappear from the site he said he was staying at so she should just claim off her own insurance! Justice for the law abiding citizen? I think not.

  4. it's a bit heavy reading, but apparently s.148 of the RTA prevents an insurer from restricting cover based on the condition of the vehicle. So I would suggest any such contractual term would be unenforceable.

Thanks mate........you see how complicated it is? VOSA are adamant on their stance........Insurers should come in line but no doubt it will be down to individual interpretation.

Personally......if I submitted my car a month before expiry and it failed i would see it as a need to rectify the faults before the due date of the original........but I would keep driving it ....unless the faults were obviously dangerous......a hole in the sill wouldn't bother me.......a defective Tyre would.

  5. I asked this question at a testers course .Once issued a mot certificate is valid for the time period it covers ie 12 months or whatever the balance to be added to the period is ie 12 months and up to thirty days (the maximum)

The mot is current and valid and is NOT cancelled out by any other test ,pass or fail

Once a pass has been issued it can not be cancelled by anyone ,not even the queen

A fail does not cancel an existing mot ,,the only issue you have is the question whether the vehicle is roadworthy which if it has failed it is then deemed to be unfit and has not met the minimum required standard for use on the road .So as such the vehicle has a current mot on it but has a defect or defects which should be corrected before further use ,knowingly using a defective vehicle is an offence in itself

That's exactly how i understood VOSA's position.......but would insurers not cover you if you had an accident after you had an early test and was failed by a brake light out......even though you were on your way to buying one?

    I'm just playing devils advocate!

  6. This may have been covered before so please forgive me if it has..........

There seems to be a grey area when taking an MOT a month earlier than the expiry of your last MOT.

If it fails it appears that VOSA and the Insurance industry are taking different views.

VOSA are saying that the original MOT is valid for the full term of the existing MOT.... but.... Insurers are saying if it has been submitted for an MOT and fails the car is not roadworthy and would not be covered.

This could lead to a claim not being covered.....

Does anyone know the certainty of this?

  7. The product is called "Holts damp start".............it laquers the leads and cap etc. so that moisture can't penetrate.

Back in the day it was a very common Toyota problem once the leads were a few years old........wouldn't start first thing in the morning but once you got it started it would start the rest of the day....then next morning misfiring!

A spray of that cured it for months.

It might not be anything to do with that but perhaps you only had trouble now the weather is changing? Especially if you don't use it every day.......

  8. Your leads could be absorbing water or condensation overnight.....means a weak and erratic spark to the plugs that cures itself if you do get it started by drying out with the heat from the engine once it's running. Then it re-ocurrs the next day if it's been damp.......

A spray of ignition lacquer seals the leads for a very long time........not WD40!

  9. I used the holy grail of tyres years ago. Back in the 70's with Goodyear we used hand cut slicks on the road cars. Best milage I got from a XJ6 coupe was 2,000 lol. Used to love cutting the grooves in with the heated tyre cutters. Make up our own patterns.

I used to do that with Dunlop A2's ......they were a dry gravel tyre but superb on tarmac once they wore down a little......and when they were almost out of tread we used to cut a few grooves in to keep the Police happy!

    Those were the days!!

  10. That's the point Brian Slick 50 coats the engine components and stays behind even when the oil is drained, so the advantages are cold start protection and to a point improvement in oil starvation protection. ( Which can only be a good thing for a pre facelift 140 owner)

From a Toyota mechanic says it all........ :)

  11. Issues with blockages are mainly due to flush additives and not additives like Slick 50 and STP, I have been a fan of slick 50 for many years.

Similar additives are used in oils like Magnatec and others.

I used to own a CRX which would burn oil like crazy, I put Slick 50 in and thrashed the nuts of it and eventually it stopped using oil and it carried on running for many years after I sold it to a mate.

I currently run it in my 140 and my 3S-FE engined Rav4.

Andy........it predates your time at Airedale! We all used it in our rally cars back in the day. :)

I rolled the Celica on a rally and whilst it was upside down we lost the oil.....we obviously didn't carry any so just carried on.......for about 25 or so hard driven miles before it put a rod through the block.....in a Big way! I think it would have happened much sooner without Slick but who knows?

  12. It does sound to me like it's the clutch not disengaging fully...........

It sounds like you are "dragging" it out of one gear in to another........if the master or slave cylinder is on it's way out then it won't push the rod fully to disengage the clutch.....this means the car is almost still in drive when you try to change gear and it "sticks" in the gear it's in rather then releasing it nicely and allowing you to engage the next gear.

It's very easy to check if the pushrod is operating correctly as others have said previously..........worth checking first!

    Good luck! :)

  13. I fell in love with the GEN 7 when it first came out but could never afford it. After nursing my mother thru a long illness and paying her fees with the proceeds of her house, I inherited a measly £5. A cruise or a GEN 7 ? The Gen 7 won and I have never regretted my purchase. Even the wife likes it although she is amazed how much I care for my car as I have never been a car freak before.

My best ever buy apart from the £10 spent joining all you guys on this super site. LONG LIVE CELICAS

You made the right choice mate.........a cruise would just be distant memories by now........you are still enjoying your car! :)

  14. mine came about from brand loyalty i guess. for years a cadet training for my job i was running a lowly 1.4 ghia mk2 fiesta. i had wanted an MR2 for years, and after i qualified i finally got the money together and went for a nicely modified MR2 Turbo, in white obviously! :D had fun with that loved it to pieces! but i wanted a car that had more seats, as few times i came a cropper with only one spare seat. so i looked to the MR2's bigger brothers, the supra and Celica.

Whilst looking for an MR2 i saw a Chilli Red Gen7 GT in a local MrT showroom, had a nosey round and looked over the specs - from there it was quite simply WANT! but, lack of rear drive put me off. i was ademant i wanted rear wheel drive. so i went with the MR2. but down the line i had to sell the MR2 to get the cash for a new house.

about a year went past and was back on my feet so finally started looking for the car i had seen in the show room all those years ago. so i came onto here and GT4 owners club and hunted through the free add's. wasnt sure what model to go for, the nice new Gen7 or the old skool cool GT4. and then i came across two stunning examples of the gen 7 in white!! had to have one. after some dealings, i flew up to fife in scotland to meety with Wullie. a deal was done and i then faced about a 500 mile drive home through some epic sceanery in scotland, and the rest of england aaaaaal the way to portsmouth on the south coast.

i think i was beaming from ear to ear all the way, epic first drive. now its become an obsession, and also the reason for bringing me and Nurse Amy together which is awesome in itsself! :D

And some time in the future i will creat the Gen 7 i always wanted, rear drive and turbo'd - a cross between the power and drive of the GT4 - MR2 and looks of the Gen 7. B)

Great story! I too love rear wheel drive......it's what I grew up with!

Lot's of Celica love from you guys! Mine was a midlife crisis too...aided by the fact that if I didn't do it now there wouldn't be any Gen 1's left to do!

My eldest son had a Jap import GT4 for a short time......it went really well and I loved driving it but it was a bag of shit really! It had a load of odd bits on it and was always breaking something....he got rid in the end.

My youngest son had a Gen7 Celica for about a year.....nice comfy car and great on the motorway.

  15. Bought a gen 6 1.8 a few years back as a cheapie when my car failed its mot, idea was run it til failed its mot bin it and get something else - six years later it finally failed an mot despite being totally abused, filled with all sorts of stuff, it'd get oil if the light came on and that was about it. Had some tyres and brake pads and a secondhand caliper in that time but nothing else. Even when it sold with no mot it went to someone who was going to put the bits right and use it.

For its reliability, usefullness and being great to drive the next car was a no brainer, but this time the vert which wants for nothing :) and the gen 5, love the flip up lights and the look of it so thats my winter ride and great fun in the snow :D

You know Arizona.........not much has changed! Back then they were noted for reliability but suffered bodily........so people just ran them until they failed the MOT or didn't do something they should!

Glad you got your money's worth..........and more! :)

Joe.....great read! I know what you mean about "lesser" cars......

Back in the 70's I was with a bunch of mates that went scuba diving. One weekend a friend asked if it would be ok to bring someone from his work along......we all said no problem.

I was driving a Rover 2000 at the time and we had Austin 1100's, a Landrover and a Triumph 1500 amongst us.........and this guy drove up in a spaceship! A Celica!

It had a rev counter!! An oil gauge!! It looked like it came from the future! I had to have one!

About 3 weeks later MPP 592L came in as part exchange to the non Toyota garage I worked at and she was mine!!

And from her I visited the local dealer for parts and finally got a job there...........

  16. I came to Celica's in the 70's when I was a Toyota mechanic.......and it kind of stuck with me......but I'm realising that they made other Celica's besides generation one's!!!

So.......please tell me how and why you came across the Celica or Celica's you are driving now!

Don't worry........I have woke up to the fact that they made others besides mine!

Is it love or lust?? :D
