  1. hi David....the thing about a basic run up is that it only tells you what power you have. You need to know how it is fuelling and where the ign and mapping are to know how to increase the power.

They are not interested in tuning for the basic run cost so you come away with not knowing what to do to rectify things.

Motorscope in Northallerton does all John's rally cars old and new and they are a demon at sorting things out.....they can map and tune and test.....very professional but not cheap.

John took his AE86 there and they re-mapped it and changed jets etc. and sorted a long standing problem with the car...parts and over 2 hours labour and the dyno runs came to about £180.....but he went away with a better running car!

  2. I was working as a Toyota mechanic when the Ta22 was out (Gen1) and people were quite mesmerized by it's curves and sleek looks...compared to what other car manufacturers were putting out it was from another world.

Then they face- lifted it and we all thought it had lost a little... they were trying to crack the american market and hence the longer bonnet and mini Mustang look....which they really did go for with the RA28GT.

When the TA40 came out (Gen2) it had lost it's uniqueness and sportiness and was starting to look more like a saloon than a coupe and for me it's one of the first cars that i remember it's rallying image helping sales as the rally version looked sporty again!

What they were really gaining with was a reputation for reliability........I remember one quarter's figures for warranty rate being 7% when British Leyland's same quarter was 74%.......!!

There one downfall was that the steel was re-cycled and the process was not as good as it is today and panels rusted but they hardly ever broke down! Also the dealers could never get enough yo sell.

It's a shame for me being in at the beginning that the Celica name has been dropped from the line....it's engraved in my very fibre!

  3. The trouble is that for every two or three decent coppers there's a right bell end, and that's the one you tend to remember

That is sadly true these days.......

    On the other hand! :)

About 30 years ago (yes i know that's a long time to some of you!!) I worked as a Toyota mechanic in a small village. I had a KE20 Corolla with 1600 Celica running gear that I used to rally. One day I was heading back to the garage which involves some nice, tight and entertaining S bends......I came through the last bend with a front wheel in the air and walking towards me was the village Plod!

I slowed down which dropped the wheel and as I looked in my mirror I saw him spin round and head towards the garage!

I parked up on the forecourt and as I got out he was walking towards me.......he stopped about 30 feet away and waved his finger in a "No..no NO" manner and then spun round and walked away.

I was bang to rights and he had me but the way he dealt with it meant that I NEVER did anything like that again in the village and I always drove sensibly from then on!

It gave me a great deal of respect for him and I didn't give him cause to worry again!

That respect for the Police lasted most of my life.

  4. Yes absolutely! I was extremely careful for the rest of the day and very grateful that he decided not to book me.

It was just the comment about me perhaps driving too fast because I was driving a fast car. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but that's how it sounded. Actually I was driving too fast because I wasn't concentrating on my speed. Also I'm a middle aged bloke dressed in a shirt and tie and was very apologetic. I wonder if that influenced his decision at all? Possibly not but it made me think.

I think he just analysed all the facts and decided that although you had a nice fast car you weren't actually behaving like a hooligan....just not concentrating!

Officers like that can do wonders for the perceived reputation of the police.

  5. Firstly............DON't just let the DEC 3rd deadline go by and get to court that way..it will come back to haunt you!

Make sure that you they know that you are going to court to contradict the way they conducted the test......NOT because you are there because you haven't paid a fine. There's a difference.........but it sounds like you handled it the right way with the Officer who spoke to you earlier....I just didn't like it when he told you to just let it go.

  6. you know Chris....I think that copper behaved in the right way.

He stopped you and gave you a telling off but didn't book you. I bet you drove a lot more consciously the rest of the day and I bet you had a lot of respect for the way he went about his job!

Kudos to that Policeman....common sense prevails.

  7. And how far out is your speedo compared to SatNav?

it's not out now at all. Against a satnav it reads 72 mph when the satnav says 70....too close to call.

The thing is Bryan that 50's are a bit low for comfort because the suspension is extremely hard and to get to the main road from my house i have 1 1/2 miles of dirt road full of potholes....hence keeping a 60 profile for some cushion.

The problem seems to be finding quality tyres in 205-60-14. Every time I read up on a great tyre it's not available in that size!

The diff is another issue........even with 14 inch tyres I want to lower the diff to make it accelerate quicker. I'm not bothered that the speedo will be out again it was just a happy coincidence that it came right changing to 14 inch wheels.

With the wheels and tyres it has on now it was doing 112mph at 6,800 in fourth according to the rolling road data and I still had an indirect 5th to go (for the road, not on a rolling road) so I can well afford to lose some top end......I'll never use it.

  8. You can move up to 15"'s but why would you need to change the diff?

Adjust the tyre wall ratio to make it as accurate for the speedo as you like.

Basically anything lower than 50 profile doesn't look right for the age of the car.......to me...so if I went 205-60-15 it would have 2" bigger wheels than std which would really up the gearing.

It's already upped on 14's as it is and so I am planning on changing the 4.1 diff to a 4.3 or 4.6 ratio to make it accelerate quicker....top speed at the moment is way beyond anything I could use.

Also I like the 14" Minilites I have!! :) Hence just the need for good tyres.

( I actually like that fitting 14 inch wheels has made the speedo accurate....on 13 inch it was way optimistic.)

  9. i run 206 60 14 on the back of the ta22 and 185 60 14 on the front on celica-supra rims

What make are they on the back? Cheers!

Yesterday I was at a Rolling Road and the owner races an Imp and he's a very quick driver and he had Yokohama A0048 road legal slicks on the car.

I asked him how they were in the wet and was gobsmacked when he said they were fantastic! He said he can pick a wheel up in the wet no problem!

I had really shied away from them because of reading or been told how lethal they were in the wet......just goes to show how subjective tyre reviews are.

  10. The original pre facelif Gen 5 had 14 inch wheels at 205x60. I have just taken them off my car because I couldnt get a choice of tyres at that size (and certainly none V rated as my MOT insisted). However I found some reasonable Falken tyres at this size which I used prior to changing the wheels. I have the full set of old wheels and tyres sitting in the garage but not much help to you as I am not very close (!)

    Gareth

Thanks anyway Gareth but that's exactly what I am talking about! No great choice out there!

I did think of going up to 15 inch but then I really, really would need a lower diff.

It should have 13 inch wheels fitted but by fitting 14 inch the once wildly inaccurate speedo is now very accurate!
