  1. I know what you mean Briano about the commuting with the gen 4 it would be a shame, but I remember the times I had so much fun with my gen 4. I think I will probably end up going your way with the gen 6. I will see how many more votes it gets lol.

Brian GT I am glad you understand my Dilemma mate. Lol

I do understand your dilemna mate, but as an aside, I seem to be covering serious mileage in a Gen 1 that makes me think that a Gen 4 is the New Kid on the block!

  2. I've been using V Power since I built my engine simply because I need 99 octane because of the high compression. I sometimes have to use Tesco Momentum which I think is good also as far as octane.

I'll probably strip my engine more times than you guys (always modding something!) so I'll let you know if the head and valves look cleaner than "normal"........

  3. I'm actually going to fit one to my Gen1.

I have twin carbs and simple ignition so setting the idle mixture is easy with my Gunson gas analyser and colortune plug but once the car is revving at 7k I have no idea what the mixture is doing without analysing the plug colour.

It's very easy with Dellorto's to get the main jet mixture correct if you have a gauge...a simple change of main jet or air corrector is all that's needed. The gauge keeps you right and saves the cost of a rolling road!

Demon Tweeks sell one with the exhaust adaptor and gauge and leads for around £150. That's the cost of one rolling road tuning session!

It's peace of mind..you don't want detonation and a very weak mixture.

  4. Just to add confusion to the case, remembering that I am questioning the way in which my car was checked and the interpretation of the results not the fact that it has an aftermarket exhaust. I have just re-read the "Road vehicles Construction & use regulations 1986" Yes it states an 82dB(A) limit, but then you have to then hunt for the method of measurement for this test. Now this is hidden away on Commission Directive 81/334/EEC Paragraph 5.2.2.4.

Basically the 82dB(A) test as quotes in the Construction & use regs can only be attained in a drive by test, not a static test.

This has to be done on an approved Test track.

The static test as used by the Police as laid out in ISO5130 does not have a results table, so the figures the Police are using are cobbled together from various different sources to make their own standard up.

    The plot thickens

Your case is becoming stronger by the minute! :)

Note down the relevant points of law but keep it simple and direct so that the Magistrate understands what you are saying first time across...that way it really sinks in.

  5. A car's claimed 0-60 (more than likely done on a perfectly dry test track under ideal conditions) is relevant for what? 0.001% of the situations you're likely to encounter in real life.

They're great for grabbing headlines & impressing 12 year olds, most definitely, but as I don't drive everywhere by caning it up to 60 before emergency stopping & then repeating ad nauseum I couldn't give a chuff really.

Big power is the easy way for people to go fast.

Any idiot can buy a powerful car & mash the loud pedal (as Audi/BMW/Land Rover drivers prove on an hourly basis on motorways across the country).

Now I know everyone thinks they're a driving god & all that, but it's extremely doubtful than anyone you know that has ever said "I need more power" has already fully exploited what power they do have (racers &track day junkies excepted).

Cash can't buy you skill unfortunately, but luckily for the un-gifted but well-endowed of wallet, it does buy big f*ck-off turbos.

As for the g6/g7 versus GT86 comparisons, well a RWD drivetrain will always sap more power than a FWD one so maybe people should start comparing WHP figures, as it's a fair bet that an 86 has a damn sight less ponies making it to terra fima.

    .

    This!!

When most people say to me "I need more power"....i just think....drive down a forest stage at 100mph with trees 6 feet either side and then say you need more power! 50bhp would be more than enough for most drivers in that scenario!

It's not a dig at anyone.....I mean that :) ....it's just that in the real world on public roads if you can wring a GT86's neck then you should be looking at a works drive.......

  6. The thing for me is that the majority of us are laughing at the "sporty looking" GT86 and saying it doesn't go very fast in the same way that Golf TDi owners are laughing at the Celica......they don't go very fast.

I think that a couple of years down the line it will replace a lot of Celica's if you are a Toyota fan simply because the Celica is no more and will be too old for most people to buy. :)

  7. The concept of the GT86 is that it's the beginning of Toyota's move towards bringing out more performance related cars......the current Chairman realises that they make boring cars these days. He is a petrol head and he races over in Japan.

The "sporty" Celica is no more and so the GT86 came along to be developed as it evolved and although it's tune is in a relatively mild state it has a chassis and suspension that can handle much more power and that is already in the pipeline.

Releasing it with serious power would have really put the price up at launch ....as it is they have brought out a car that every reviewer has raved about, except for those that test it for 30 mins in town and say that it's not quick enough because they exploited the handling to the full around Sainsbury's roundabout......

If you see one around the Dales driven by an elderly man with a woolly hat give it a wide berth......unless you can really drive!!

Give it a chance....it's early days yet but I wager that in a couple of years time serious amounts of Gen 7's will be dumped in favour of it! :)

  8. Red or pink is fine but shouldn't be used on pre 1990 cars as it is acid based and degrades silicone compounds used for sealing gaskets etc.

Whichever you use I would change every 2 years anyway as it flushes out debris from the system as you change it......all helps the cooling system to stay in good order.

For older cars use blue/green and change every 2 years.

  9. Giving up? Ehhhhh? I've spent 6 months searching for brake parts for my Gen 1....I've paid a lifetimes wages in postage from Ozzyland to get them and I almost had to fly someone over to fit them.........so don't tell me you are giving up over a plastic boot spoiler!!

    Pfffht!

  10. Awesome! Well done mate! Looks like it was a great day for pics!

I've been buying that magazine for a while and it's about time we had something different from a MGB/Triumph......which is particularly irritating because you can get ALL the parts for those!

I spoke with Neil Campbell before Xmas and they are talking about doing a restoration piece on my Gen1 so I hope that comes off too!

They seem a decent set of guys and they all seem to have a great sense of humour too!

  11. Had a fella wander over at Sainsburys and ask me what my car was on saturday, while his mate was jetwashing his very muddy Land rover.I probably get more attention of that sort than i do people waving or whatever, though i have had the odd thumbs up from a couple of other Jap marques and a VW owner with a euro style slammed Golf before now

That happens to me a lot! Supermarket car parks! Most modern Celica drivers have no idea what my car is....even with Toyota written all over it!!
