  1. One of my local Toyota dealerships (silsden) used to have a proper dodgey mechanic working there he dint even know what a celica was. He thought it was a Prius

As Planc knows I used to work there......34 years ago! They were the 6th oldest Toyota dealership in the country and people came from all over the north east to get their cars serviced there. it was a great time to be a mechanic!

It was different in those days, old school mechanicing with cars you could always fix first time because they were so simple!

That's why I still run an oldie.......even I can remember how it works! :D

  2. You have to remember that Denso, Bosch etc. don't make cars.....they supply parts to manufacturers who DO make cars.

They supply them at a price point that the car manufacturer needs....and if the manufacturer thinks he can get that part much cheaper and brand it it's own it will do. It's just economics......so a Bosch/Denso filter might be better quality.

There has been so many discussions on here about "Trd" oil filters being better than an "ordinary" filter but as i pointed out previously......what's the difference in how much each filter flows?? They both fit.....but which flows the most oil by litr per minute?

For the record.......I use a Ford filter on my 76 Celica that has a high capacity pump fitted. Why? Because the guys that built the Toyota race engines used one....... because the Toyota filter couldn't cope. Sometimes MR.T tries it on.........

  3. Nah not at all

If I can help someone avoid making the same mistakes though I will ;)

Big problem is that it gives similar symptoms for each. No power, crappy idle, difficult start up so you could get lucky and fix one of them and get it right first time. Orrrrrr you could fix all 4 and it's the last one that needed sorting.

That's like the tail wagging the dog! Manufacturers mechanics are supposed to be able to zone in and "know" what the fault is without guess work......it's like the car is sat their grinning......."Go on mate.......have a guess!"

In my day, a set of plugs and points and you only had the two choices!! :D

  4. Comment from wife after first and last drive in my Celi... "its too low, too loud and wayyy to bumpy.. i never want to drive that thing again!" ....... Happy Days, :D

That's EXACTLY what I was told when my wife got in mine!! I'm SO glad she has zero interest in the car! ;)

  5. It's very noticeable in my car. I don't have an ECU or anything to compensate ignition timing so I can feel the difference as soon as I put cheaper fuel in. It's just got "less of everything"....I suppose modern cars can compensate and blur the edges but mine can't.

I use Shell V power whenever I can but I don't worry if I have to use other stuff.

  6. Was something posted in this thread about the Db levels being on the V5? Cba to read through every post again lol.

Just seen on my V5 for my everyday car (punto) that it has a stationary reading and a drive by reading, yet on the V5 for my G reg celica there is no such reading.

This is getting serious now........db levels on the V5! We as motorists are such an easy criminal element to persecute......I'm all for the Police but it does make even me cynical these days.

  7. Had my run in with the Norfolk Police this weekend!

Was driving to Chris and Clares this weekend and there was an accident on the A47. I asked the Police at the accident how to get around the accident as Im not from the area and theyre comment was "Sorry I cant hear you over you illegal exhaust" I ignored them comment and asked him again and drove off without mentioning my exhaust. Didnt want to get into an argument over it.

After reading this thread I was abit nervous driving my car to Norfolk due to how loud it is lol. Lets just say on the way home I made a run for the border and avioded any police haha.

Seems like they really do have a bee in their bonnet over exhausts on anything remotely sporty looking........hope the Norfolk disease doesn't spread to any other county!

  8. Have to disagree with this I'm afraid.

I have used drilled discs in the past.

Started with Black Diamonds. They started with very fine cracking from the holes outwards. I replaced them with another set.

Second set of Black Diamonds (less than 18 months from the first set) eventually went the same way. I remember being in Cumbria on a rally and tyre kicking, one of the other owners asked if my discs were ok as there was a crack coming out from the hole and another one on the edge of the disc working its way towards the other.

It was a slow drive home!

I replaced them with a set of AP Racing 4 pot calipers with genuine AP racing 330x28mm discs.

These lasted around 9 months before they started to crack from the holes. I even spent time looking after these and cleaning out the holes every week or 2 as well. Wasn't impressed as to replace them, they cost me £250... EACH!

So it doesn't matter how much you spend, the likelihood is drilled discs will crack and need replacing before the equivalent grooved or plain versions.

If you're happy knowing that, then all's well and good. But due to this, manufacturers will very rarely warranty drilled discs.

I advise anyone who orders though me about my experience, but if the customer is happy to go ahead, then no problem here. :)

Great post! Based on fact and not interweb myth.

  9. My car is polybushed and also has rose jointed castor arms. It's quite important with polybushes to lube them at least once a year with fresh asembly grease.

The std rubber bushes on TA22 rear links are quite hard already. The rubber is bonded to the eye of the link rods and pivots around the mounting bolt but that seizes over time so really all that is happening is that the movement is limited to the amount of twist or give in the rubber.

Polybushes don't attach to the eye and so can swivel in the eye and on the bolt so providing they are kept lubricated they actually give a decent ride.

Having said that I'm putting on Group 4 Escort rose jointed links once I can afford them!
