  1. Does anyone know how does the DVLA determine what plate/year to give to a imported car?

Coz I don't think there is anything on my car or documentations that states the month/year of registeration.

Apart from LOG book and online services (DVLA) - how does one determine the registration of a UK car?

    Yeah.

When a car is imported from Japan, the owner fills out form to register it.

Form includes space for year of manufacture.

That form is backed up by the English Translated Deregistration Certificate from Japan.

The form SHOULD say the same year of manufacture as noted on the Dereg Cert.

Some folks make a mistake, some folks blag it, some folks are just thick at filling in forms, sometimes the dvla make the mistake.

Various reasons for year of manufacture being different from year of registration.

I imported a 1990 Delica, filled out forms correctly, came back an X reg (year 2000).

Can only assume the operator saw the zero at the end and gave it a 2000 registration.

Queried the X reg at the desk when I collected the docs and tax disc.

Got told it's done now and nothing can be done about it.

Actually, you CAN have it changed but it is a more hassle and paperwork.

There are some folks that de-register their Private Conveyances altogether, but that's a whole different kettle of herring altogether.

  2. Had the conversion done on a Pajero a few years ago.

    Mobile aircon guy did it.

Cost me, iirc, about £90 and took about two hours.

Basically they empty the system, test for leaks, chuck in some kind of protective oil substance and fill it with new gas.

    Worked fine.

New gas in old system is apparently ok, it'll work, but without the proper conversion and sealing with oil, it can degrade the seals in the system,so I was told and researched.

  3. No mate, downloading maps and programming cars is way above my pay grade.

Car was running rough, took it to The Garage in Wishaw ( recognised experts in their field ) who diagnosed faulty MAF.

Got them one, they got it fitted and mapped the car. They then called me laughing - "that little car's a total hoot to drive". :)

It was, upgraded everything. Best about it was it went through auction and no-one but me knew what it was - a well modded MX5 Eunos roadster.

By 'eck I made some dosh on that one. :)

  4. Have to say, after folks mentioning the service book...

I have bought and sold a lot of ncars in the last ten years and

there aren't many folks that I have come across walk away because the service history isn't there.

Having said that there are probably a few that would have liked to have known the service was done.

For me, proof of purchase is enough for that.

Full service history and "stamped up book" tends to mean less than it once did.

  5. Carrick Alloy Refurb, was called Carrick Engineering, Prestwick, Scotland.

Dunno prices to public cos I am trade customer.

Imagine no more than 50 per wheel.

They remove wheel from car, remove tyre, caps, weights etc.

They then straighten the wheel, make it round again, remove dents, prep the wheel then powder coat it.

They the put the caps and tyre back on and balance the thing.

They then put it back on the car.

Lot of work for 50 quids.

I don't know of anyone in the Glasgow, Lanarkshire or Ayrshire area that can straighten and make the wheel round again.

    Except Carrick.

  6. I have had loadsa dents pulled by these type of guys.

Small dents are left looking invisible.

Larger dents CAN be harder, but not always.

Had a Seat with an eight inch dent in it, maybe dented in an inch, on the wing.

Guy comes out, says it's not creased and proceeded to hammer away.

Was ALMOST invisible when he left . Amazing result.
  7. I'm gonna disagree that you cannot get damage unless you use loads of pressure.

I have had my Sealey rotary for about 8 years and polished many cars.

Initially, I used on an FTO and melted the paint on one corner.

I was more careful after that. Just keep the thing moving and lubed with water.

I have also had a Festool RO150 electric DA sander, converted to polisher and it is superb.

    Lightweight, fast, huge torque.

Can polish cars and can also apply and remove wax at a fast, fast rate.

Expensive for the Festool, but my understanding is that the silverline and other polishers are similar, maybe just not as much torque.

In my experience, hand polishing or waxing does not achieve the same results.

Reduced time and effort is the clincher for me.

By the way, I have described waxing and polishiong as two different process here.

For me, polishing is cutting into paint, waxing is laying product OVER the paint. hth

  8. The diag reader looks fine, but don't think it's Universal, as stated.

No one machine will read all cars.

No one machine will access all areas of car.

eg, my C Reader does not recognise Rover 25 2002 model, but when you tell the machine to clear the engine management light it does it.

My mate gave a me £180 Autel, it cannot see the Rover and can't reset the light.

The Autel works with more cars though.
