Jim881
Hi all, I am looking at getting my calipers refurbed. Ive bought all new seal kits but I really want to tart them up a bit beforehand. I trying to keep costs down so was thinking of getting them sandblasted down and then acid etch and hammeriting them myself. Anyone know someone that could do this? Looked at powdercoating at Biggred but its a little more than i wanted to spend, but if someone knows somewhere cheaper i might consider getting that done. I seem to remember someone getting theres done at a place in Grimsby. Jim
Insanity-74
I would just wire brush them to save money, but sand blasting is fine...soda blasting would be better as its water soluble so will clean up alot better with less risk of contamination with sand in the system...although its pretty easy to remove all the sand with little effort. Also forget Hammerite, I hate the stuff, its thick, stinks when it gets hot and chips easily when aged a bit......... there are a lot better paints available. At the very least I would use VHT paint, lasts well and comes in a good selection of colours http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint/vht-paints.html Eastwood paints are very good although have less colour selection http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint/eastwood-paints/silver-high-temp-coating-333g.html The best...or at least my favourite http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint/por15-paints/por15-black-velvet-heat-resistant-paint.html but only available in black Also Halfords VHT paint isnt bad...painted my calipers black with it about 5 years ago and they still look good. You could also try the POR15 Hardnose paint, but I am not sure how heat resistant it is http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint/por15-paints/por15-hardnose-paint-black-946ml.html
Jim881
Thanks mate They've got some bright blue which is just what im after!!! Would you bother acid etching first? Suppose you dont know where i could get soda blasting done do you?
Insanity-74
Acid etching......if the VHT paint requires it then yes...if not then no most sand blasters will soda blast as well....if not, then sand blasting should be OK, just make sure you get rid of all the sand before you do anything else......and mask off the internals which could be difficult....the sand can get into the smallest crack. Fat tony
Don't get them sand blasted unless you are willing to spend several hours/days blowing the grit out of them. Fully strip them and have them soda or acid stripped.
sh3p
the place in Grimsby was CJ powder coating on Whilton Rd Ind.Est. i had no problems with grit in them,as i was renewing the seals i left the piston in & taped everything up for them, although there was no need as they removed everything & redid it, as they have had problems years ago with grit in places so are very careful to stop that happening, they charged me £60 for all 4 http://www.celica-club.co.uk/forum/index.php?/topic/135998-calipers-back/page__hl__%2Bpowder+%2Bcoaters__fromsearch__1
