The handbrake mech on the 6 is junk, one of the rare bits that isn't well designed. It's far too complicated and a pain to work on...I wish it just used the rear calipers with a lever that pushes the pads to the disc like a lot of cars have...

funny enough my van has the same system (LT35 VW) and sometimes the handbrake works brilliant and others its like the celica, feels tight but will roll down the hill on you :P

pain in ass :( all morning saturday ,sunday and today was cleaning calipers ,drums and whole that bloody mechanism in them ,ive adjust it several times .and as u said mate sometimes holds tight but other time when i took it for spin and try to park uphill car roll dow :( .dnt know what happening in there .it may be the brake lines coz shoes looks fine ...or i dnt know , i just fed up and fact that she needs new clutch spoil my mood as well .I promise to myself if she pass mot ill do clutch and keep her but now evrything complicate .So now if i go to garage to sort out brakes it may cost me lots of money .i need quote for that :( so clutch 229 (got quote already) plus brakes 100-200 ish God knows and in total will be too much. im thinking of braking her .ill try to put some list of parts and if will be enough interest ill brake my heart but ill do it :( and get myself 300zx :)

you can do the handbrake cables yourself

funny enough on motorway today one of my cables gave up and i got the crazy rumble (the one that makes you think a wheels about to fall off)

cables come in 3 parts,

front part (which will be fine - dont worry about this)

rear left - always siezes

rear right - as above

leave a gen 6 with its handbrake on for a few weeks and your in trouble the adjusters are made of alu (dont ask why) and these corrode and form a solid lump stopping the cable moving freely. only option really is to replace, they are about £50ish each and if you know how to take the rear discs off then its pretty self explanatory how to fit the cables

take it to a garage and factor in about 2 hours labour at least for 1 cable

yeah handbrake cables can be done DIY but for the love of god get ramps i done mine on my back and it was raw afterwards, the main problem is the exhaust runs right over the equiliser and also has a heat shield covering it, once its in, its just routing it and bolting it back in place.

after doing mine the handbrake was sooooo much nice and didnt just flop around it springs down when releasing like it should!.

You couldn't really do the cables on ramps as you need the rear wheels of..

btw little guide about brake lines plzzz .so i know i need to remove drums then obviusly i cn c brake line end but where is the other end of it ? is all the work goes under the car or it meets front cable part near handbrake leaver inside the car ? do i need to remove centre console etc ???

You need to be under the car, the cable is 3 parts,

1st part comes from inside the car (handbrake lever) out to the equiliser under the car,

2nd and 3rd part forks off from the equiliser to the right and left cables you have to remove the heatshield above the centre bit of the exhaust to get access and the cables are just bolted to the body in a couple places

only thing u have to do is slacken off the adjuster inside the car to make it a little bit easier to remove the cables
