I've fitted Mtec grooved and drilled discs with standard Mintex pads a few months ago; all seems fine
-
I was charged £10 earlier this week to fit my tyre to my newly refurbished wheel, including new valve with the new rubber bit (whatever it's called) and balance at Just Tyres in Huddersfield. I watched them do the work and they observed notable care to ensure there were no nicks and scratches. Can't imagine doing such a speedy and effective job myself with whatever DIY equipment might be available.

Good news indeed. It's a fiddly job according to my mechanic who replaced my rad last October. Getting rid of the air pockets seemed to be the main hassle.

Is there much advantage in using super unleaded in (your Celica here)?

I bought mine from a garage without a test drive. Car was fundamentally sound. Just needed lots of spending on ancillaries. Could've turned out less good I suppose. Car purchasing can be such a lottery. Looks like the best decision you made was to walk away.

I was always told by my dad to turn the lights off once I'm on the driveway. That extra few seconds with the car running nothing but the engine before you switch it off really helps apparently
I believe it's because the battery's getting a last little charge if treated in this way. Over my many years of (winter) car ownership, I've never had to use additional devices to care for batteries. Maybe it's different if the car's not used for lengthy periods particularly in winter. My car gets used almost daily.

I've noticed that rust is developing ("growing") in the drilled holes of my discs (fitted a few months ago) and effectively "filling in" the holes. I'll be spending time next weekend working carefully on them with a drill.

I heard some advice a few years ago about preserving your battery in the winter especially if the car's being used for shorter journeys in the main. Switch off all electrics and maybe give a couple of light blips of the throttle or let the engine run for a few seconds and THEN turn off the engine. I'd imagine most batteries are pretty resilient if they're treated well in winter.

Just received these; screw fitting; perfect

Put it in neutral at lights; clutches should last for massive mileages but people just love to wear out the clutch bearings sitting in first gear at traffic lights. Never understood why.

Wheel bearings can be quite pricey for these cars which makes it tempting to gravitate towards very much cheaper alternatives. Well I found this site which is full of horrors:
http://www.made-in-c...eel bearing hub
Some entire hub assemblies on this site are selling wholesale for $1 and $2 each!! Probably put together in an airless factory unit by an underaged workforce who aren't allowed to take a comfort break without losing an hour's wages! Some of the photos of the items on a well known auction site also look like they've been lifted directly from one of these wholesale sites. Having reviewed this issue, I think I'd rather spend proper money on items which have been constructed by adults! I have to carry other people in my car and I think they deserve my respect.
Here's an interesting comment from someone who seems to know their stuff:

Well I've had this motor since beginning of August. £2.5k inclusive of purchase, servicing, repairs, upgraded parts and labour. Commuting or thrashing or loading up with mountain bike and camping gear. Relatively easy and cheap to fix and maintain. Delightful little car. Love it!

There's actually an alternative from ebay
surprisingly barely any cheaper than Toyota

... and new rear discs and pads; just seen really great deal on well known auction site

... and winter tyres

My Celi is my daily commutemobile so I'm going to use it every day whatever the weather. Just need to drive carefully when conditions are less than perfect.
My 15 mile round trip commute will continue to be done by pushbike whenever it's dry so my 140 will be doing service mainly in poor weather throughout winter. A gentle throttle will be the order of the day.

With regards to the celica being a babe magnet i've caught one rather attractive blonde girl having her photo taken with it outside work, not sure why but I wasn't complaining
I've got an '04 Gen 7; prettiest car I've ever owned and the only car I've ever had that (totally non-petrol headed) women universally comment on in a favourable manner without prompting.

For the considerable premium Greenstuff demands over Mintex (over 3 times the cost), they should be receiving universal praise. I think I'll stick to Mintex.
-
I use the greens, had to as only greens for Avensis calipers
MTEC have Mintex for Avensis 277mm and 295mm calipers
-
What are the advantages of Greenstuff over Mintex given the quite significant price premium i.e. £70 v £20? Is the difference sufficiently noticeable for primarily road use to warrant the extra beer tokens?
MTEC discs,who's using them?

I bought grooved and drilled discs from MTec late 2013 and they've developed a horrible juddering when braking from very high speed. Quite horrible. I'm assuming they've become slight warped. They're being replaced soon. Independent outlet here in Hudds said he can get me a pair of Brembos for sensible money.
