  1. 7j can accept 195 to 225 with the ideal being 205 to 215.

IMO, with the power upgrade you will be having on a chassis designed for 158bhp, I would move away from the concept of summer/winter tyres and just get an outstanding set of boots from the outset. My personal preference being from Uniroyal or Continental....leaning slightly towards Conti's (Lets not start another yawn of a tyre debate :D )

I'm a fan of the std 185 GT4 wheels, but the reality is there's limited choice for tyres. In your case, the offset is wrong also (GT4-39 GT-45). There was a noticeable adverse effect on the handling when using teddybears on my GT, but put up with it because, like you, I liked them. Additionally, they weigh a ton! When I swap from my 6 spoke to the cast GT4 wheels, you instantly feel them on there!

Well done for flying the teddybear flag, but IMO the car deserves and will need something better.

  2. I hope there is still time for me to get a 165, daddy of them all. It was going to be my next project, but the Gen5 is a hard habit to break. :D

I reckon all it will take is a car show like Wheeler Dealers, Car SOS etc to do a GT4, raise it's current profile, and the price will go up. They seem a forgotten performance car, all under valued considering their capability and motorsport history. I've talked to a few people since I had my GT4 and they have had no idea what it is. It's even been called a Honda :P

I love the Celica, always have, and as much as the "beer money" price is good for the likes of us, it sort of gives the car a disposable element that's not good for it's survival.

  3. Won't do any harm to reuse or replace the cover bolts, especially if they are a reasonable cost.

Again, I've only used threadlock in the past if instructed, but the last clutch change I did on the CS, no threadlock used.on the cover bolts. Never done a clutch on a Gen7, but if the manual says to use threadlock.......you know :) Just torque them up progressively to spec in the correct sequence.

  4. I replace the flywheel bolts without question. New OEM bolts usually come pre-coated with the correct type threadlock anyway, but if not, make sure you use the recommended type as instructed.

I've always re-used the cover bolts unless it's stated in the manual that they are not a re-useable item.

I have reused flywheel bolts in the past with no adverse effect, but only on old Fords :D

  5. 14- Igniter/ECU

Possible circuit fault from igniter to ECU. May just be a poor connection. Unplug and push back in a few times on igniter and ECU connections.

Possible faulty igniter module, but the car runs normally for a good while?

Always worth removing the module and coil including the brackets, cleaning the mounting areas and refitting to ensure a good earth.

I'm sure there will be other suggestions for you to check.

Hope you sort it soon

  6. I agree. Tyres/brakes and tip top fluids are key for sustained high speed motoring. Regular bonnet opening for visual checks on belts and everything else is another. Nitrogen filled tyres is sometimes recommended :)

After that, it's always nice to have a good set of gauges to keep check on oil pressure/temp etc....personally I like to keep an eye on the oil temperature :)

  7. If you have somewhere to keep it/work on it, it would be a good project car. Good for keeping your hand in with welding, mechanical and painting. It will need everything replacing and cost a fair bit of coin in the process too. But it is what it is, an old Gen5 with that gawd awful blue interior :P

I love these cars and would like to see all the remaining ones saved. If you take it on and rescue it. Well done that man!
