Possible cause is a poor earth in one of your brake bulbs holders on stop and tail. Some of the brake voltage runs back from bulb earth down the side light wire and operates the low resistance LED's in series with the brake light. Your LED's are acting like a test lamp.
Check earth continuity from holder to body by clipping a temporary earth to the rear holders in turn. If the LED's do not illuminate on braking it is your original earthing lead to chassis. Or you can remove the light bulb on one side and try, then both, this will identify which holder earth is bad.

I have bought a conditioner from ebay, it is tiny and not designed to fast charge a dead battery.
Instead the conditioner reverse pulses a low battery to wake it up, it then goes into normal charge mode until the charge rate drops. The circuit then drops to a maintenanance mode which just matches the voltage losses from radio, alarm etc.
I have a big heavy duty charger to get a dead battery up to working condition in a hurry.
Many people think that an alternator will recover a jump started battery, this is not correct unless you have a long run. An alternator can maintain a battery perfectly but will struggle to recharge a discharged one. The voltage regulator etc work against the requirements by trying to balance the load when you are driving. (This is the simple version it is a bit more complicated in reality.)
A cheap trickle charger can kill (cook) a good battery by boiling off the electrolyte,been there done that. I have had some sucess with a cheap caravan type solar charger, it keeps my boat battery maintained when not in use. Halfords, 10years plus and still going strong.

Of the above cars I have broken 1 engine (Escort), replaced 1 torque converter (Granada) bent front (Cortina), disintegrated water pump (P38) otherwise touch wood the rest has been the usual consumables.
Now that was a silly question to ask an old retired petrol head :rolleyes:

It is unlikely if the seals on your compressor will hold out long, presuming you are referring to your 162.
I have a 183 and the compressor gave up spectacularly and immediately after filling with new gas and oil. We fitted a second hand compressor from a 205 using some bits from my old one to take care of different bolt centres.
Then a couple of weeks later the radiator blew. So you need a good system to start with or it will fail due to the higher pressures.
