Well I've had my GT86 for a year now, I've no idea why people say they are slow, 200bhp in a lightweight car makes it very nippy, it still puts a smile on my face every time I get in it.

The powers fine, the car feels quicker than the figures suggest, as for getting my ass kicked, won't happen, I have no interest in racing anyone, bit long in the tooth for that:-)

I've been driving Toyota's since 1981, in that time apart from brakes, tyres, exhaust and the odd battery, I've replaced the odd bulb, one clutch, two radiators, one thermostat, one water pump, one cv joint and an advance/retard mechanism, I've only broken down once due to faulty contact breaker points (the dealer didn't replace them at a service and he paid dearly for that) that's not bad in 35 years and too many miles to even think about, my current car is a GT86 and so far that's been reliable as well.
oh, and none of them failed an MOT during my ownership.

Beams anyone? Faff? Two that got me for a while.
Faff got me as well lol

They also wrote to me ( in 1995) to tell me my late registered Carina 11 Exec was exempt from a cat test after I had issues with the mot man, it was a 1992 car, but on a K plate, very helpful at the time and seems as if they still are.

Owned my SR for six years now.

Well, I'm 60 next year and as a treat to myself I'll be buying a GT86 for my birthday, should be down to around £12k by then.

My last set were Falken Ziex 914's and i found them a great tyre all round good wet grip, amazing dry grip and they lasted a good 12-15K miles. Enjoy them! Make sure to rotate regularly to keep the wear even!
That's what I did with the Pirelli's, done well over 20k on them, but these ones feel great.
-
Had five Falken ZE 914 tyres fitted to my SR this morning to replace the worn out Pirelli P6000's the car feels completely transformed, the steering is a lot more responsive, less tramlining and quieter ride, early days I know, but they certainly feel like a big improvement.

Could be a faulty starter motor or solenoid, you may also have missed an earth connection, have you tried to start it with a push or tow?

To OP.This one looks interesting...............http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Celica-1-8-VVTLI-T-sport-190BHP-2005-/251818411479?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3aa18c05d7
Looks very nice mate, but TBH, I'm looking for one with a with a much lower mileage, I know these cars will go to the moon and back, but I'm looking for a car to last me for the next six to eight years, that's when I retire:-)

Thanks for all the comments guys, like I said, I'm not in a rush, will keep looking, obviously don't want to pay over the odds, but prepared to pay right price for the right car.
-
It did feel like it had done more than 39k, pleased I had a drive though, gives me something to compare next time, I'm in no rush, my SR runs sweet, just fancy a change, I'll wait for the right car to come along, gonna try the 190/GT as well....but it may not have actually been 39k in reality.!...or had a rough life..either way...you were right to walk away.
Good luck.
Neil

Thanks all, I will test some more, just couldn't believe a Toyota would feel so loose at 39k, and I've been driving them since 1981
-
I am of the same opinion, gut instinct can tell you an awful lot, my SR felt right from the moment I drove it, been a great car for the past 5 years, just fancy a change.
-
As per title, test drove a 140 today, apparently 39k on clock, looked lovely outside, but inside was a bit scruffy, lots of scratches on plastics etc, didn't feel very tight compared to my gen 6 SR with 87k on the clock, also felt a bit slower, is this normal? Expected to notice the power increase, but everything felt a bit loose, reckon it's been clocked at some point in it's life, had new oil in the engine, no death rattle, but didn't feel quite right. Only had latest MOT certificate showing mileage back to 2011, also only had one key, walked away, was a bit disappointed TBH, quite fancied getting a gen 7, I am I expecting to much or do gen 6's feel like a better car? Should I keep looking?

Is it the front drivers side? had the same problem on my SR, just changed the whole CV joint (comes complete with the reluctor ring) Joint was only £13 on ebay, did it two years ago, still fine now, but the bolts came out easily cos I changed the clutch 6 months previously.

i fall out with mine at times too, but then i just go get whatever part it needs fix it any straight back to loveing it again. Its the classic timeless look o the 5 that gets me every time
maybe you just need to get the love back by getting it fixed and taking it a good cruise to start

Good call, I also have an MX5 and a Celica.

Hang on, here's a thought. Car was Imported in 2000, can it really have gone without a re-gas for 14 years and still be working!?!
Yep it could go all that time without a re-gas, I also have an import MX5, I imported it in 2001 and the aircon is ice cold, it's got the polar bear killing R12 gas in it.

I've had my 1999 SR since August 2010, I also had a gen2 1600ST Coupe for three years from 1980 to 1983 and then a gen 3 2.0 XT liftback from 1986 until 1991 in between I had a new Corolla from 1983 until 1986, another nearlly new Corolla from 1991 until 1994, that was followed by a Carina II 2.0 Executive until 2001(loved that car)

I have 16" Momos that came as standard on the SR. The tyre size that is correct for me is 205/50/r16 with a V or above rating. I'm actually running with 205/55/r16 because they were slightly cheaper and should not affect the speedo reading a great deal. The wider the tyre you get ie 215 or 225 the more tram lining and road noise you get and the more expensive it gets. I know this as when I got my car it had 225/45/r16 on and they wern't nice at all. They rubbed slightly on full lock turning also. I'm very happy with 205/55r16 running on about 32/33 psi. Hope this helps.
I'm glad you've posted that, I have an SR that will need tyres for it's MOT and I was thinking about changing from 50's to 55's, mind made up now, cheers mate

A 2017 review of the Gen7!

I did look at the last of the gen 7 GT's but they were asking too much money for a 10 year old car, So being a big birthday for me I went for the 86, luggage space hasn't caused any problems as there are only two of us now the kids have left home, a two week tour of Ireland last year was fine, didn't even have to fold the seats forward and if I need to transport a larger item I can always nick the wife' car lol.
Rear wheel drive is not a big deal for me as I learned to drive in a MK1 Escort and most of my driving "education" was in rear wheel drive cars, I've always thought that rear wheel drive cars feel better balanced, but I'm comfortable driving either. At the end of the day most of us buy the car that best suits our needs, and the 86 suits most of mine atm. as for the 86 lacking power, these times tell a different story. http://fastestlaps.com/tests/df2vussaz7j1
