  1. Lack of PAS fluid will feel lumpy for lack of a better word kinda goes through hard and soft patches mid turn, and is a fairly distinctive sound. The resistance should be a lot smoother all the way through the turn now you topped it up. But since all gen 5s have a PAS leek as standard its worth having a bottle with you at all times. Also very handy for when you need to top up you auto gearbox fluid as its the same stuff.

Now go check your tyre presures

note to self must stop using vegetables as power steering componants

it doesnt feel lumpy or anything, i think its back to normal and im just thinking it feels looser as im paying more attention. it never felt lumpy at all actualy, it was weird how it was driving normal then it just suddenly went really loose, if it was running low id imagine it to be gradual. i filled it to the max line and its still on the line now so the leak (not leek) cant be that bad. the steering wheel does now turn itself back after a corner which it didnt do at all before i filled it up.

i dont suppose you would know what causes the bite to be so high apart from a fucked clutch? its a year old, i refuse to believe ive already killed it. im not replacing it again so if it does need doing i'll drive until its undrivable then SORN it, which Im quite likely to have to do anyway

  2. been out for a drive and the steering feels slightly looser than it did after i put PAS fluid in yesterday. I might just be imagining this though as subconsciously Im paying more attention to the steering now. Its definately not as loose as it was and I dont seem to have lost any PAS fluid.

Does it just take a bit of a drive to get it running through the system properly again?? The whining has stopped anyway.

I have been suggested a theory by 2 people, that maybe when the PAS tank is empty its replaced by air which means there is no pressure hence the loose steering when its empty. To me that makes sense. But so does the theory of steering getting heavier when power steering isnt working.

Either way, a £7.49 fix seems to have sorted it..... for now...

  3. You're welcome. Betty's booked in for a pre JAE fettling next week as there is a niggling little rattle from the underneath and I have some gear linkages and oil and depending on cross Atlantic post, plugs to fit too. The guy that looks like a grubby Gandalf in the spray shop next door is good to know too as is Nick Abbot for electrics.

aw i wish i was going to jae. best weekend ever last year.

im thinking of wrapping my car, im pretty sure ive picked out the wrap i want and il do it myself when i know my car is mechanically perfect and i have the money

  4. Regrettably my mechanical knowledge can be written on a stamp.........

without getting the Queen's face dirty :( . If you can't get one of the crew down and you need something fixed then

I get my work done by Simon at Westhill Garage, top of Chatto Road in Torquay. He's the owner and hubby of one of our secretaries.

Tell him I sent you and you will be looked after. He is usually busy though. Good garages that don't rip you off are!

thanks, thats brilliant. Im off to Torquay halfords in a bit to get some PAS fluid and see what that sorts out. I think it just needs a bit of normal maintenance, i never check any oil levels or tyre pressures or anything like that

I shall definately pop in and see him at some point :)

  5. That's not so bad then,if the PAS leak is the main high pressure hose like the gen4s suffer from its not horrendous money to get a new one made up,though its refitting it.Like you say you need another Bek. (is such a thing possible?)

to be honest the pas leak doesnt bother me. its only small and i think its always been there since i got the car in 2010.

nah, there's only one bek, he's worth throwing some petrol money at to get him over here though

  6. Get her mechanically checked again properly before you spend your cash on cosmetics Kitti

    Why is the PAS empty?

i no longer have a local Bek anymore and im not sure Id trust anyone else to look at her. But yes I will get it all sorted before the wrapping, its gonna be about a year or so until I have spare money anyway, and I have no idea if I'll still have her then.

I have a small PAS leak (like most gen 5s) and I just havent got round to topping it up yet, Im gonna do that tomorrow and see if the whining stops. I can always take her off the road until I have the money to sort her, Ive actually got somewhere to store her now

  7. With sally I had experience of wobbly steering and pulling. The cause was worn rear suspension bushes. Hth.

im not entirely sure but i think the bushes were all replaced for mot. ive just taken her for a drive and apart from a loud wining which i believe is because the PAS fluid is empty, she seems to be fine now. I wish my car would decide whether she's broken or not

the steering no longer feels incredibly loose and shes always very very slightly pulled to the left (either that or my steering wheel isnt on 100% straight)

steering has now changed to slightly heavy which i know is just empty PAS which I'll top up tomorrow.

I hope she doesnt die anyway, she's getting a full body wrap when I can afford it but cant chose between 2 colours...
