'89 celica overheating problem - it never rains but it pours

After my recent request for info after my overdrive wouldnt engage, I was told that it was due to not getting up to temperature.

I investigated the cooling system further and found no thermostat fitted!

After fitting a new thermostat, I found that on a run the car would be fine for upto 80 miles and then start to overheat- boiling over quickly and never recovering, usually after slowing for a short period. Around town, it can get hot quickly but seems fairly random!

I understand there is an inherent problem with the water pump?? can anyone cast a little light on this for me please?

I'm not sure if it loses water through boiling over, or boils over as a result of low water! I have driven it on a few short trips and not overheated it, and it doesnt appear to have lost any water, suggesting that the overheating causes the loss of water rather than vise-versa.

Any help greatly appreciated as always.
