Falling out of love with the Celica

When I first bought my car a few months ago I believed the sun shone out of its exhaust pipe for the first 2-3 months I would always turn and look at it 3 or 4 times every time I walked away from it. However, as time goes on I find I'm not turning to look at it when I walk away from it, I'm quite often kicking the door shut now instead of pushing it gently but firmly and I find myself cursing it or bashing it verbally almost every day.

There are a number of things that massively annoy me about the car that I'd love to put right however my current frame of mind is 'what's the point, it's only a celica, a mildly warm (read almost cold) over designed, under powered rattly Japanese GT car trying just a bit too hard to be sporty'

Now I know I'm on the owners club and you all love your celica so please don't think I'm just bashing the car or trolling (after all I do own one!)

Have any of you felt the same about your celica? If so how did you get over it? I'm planning on spending a little bit of money to upgrade/change the look of some parts which I'm hoping ignite a spark in the same way you buy your girlfriend some new clothes when your getting bored of her.

It's worth noting I crashed the car 3 weeks ago and have barely driven it since as I can't get it fixed until payday but my feeling towards the car were in decline before the accident.

Please someone help me love my celica again or make me feel less bad about not loving it anymore...

i fall out with mine at times too, but then i just go get whatever part it needs fix it any straight back to loveing it again. Its the classic timeless look o the 5 that gets me every time :)

maybe you just need to get the love back by getting it fixed and taking it a good cruise to start

Basically the damage from the crash required new front wing, front bumper, headlight, archliner and washer bottle

The issues with the car- the brakes are crap, the laquer has crows feet almost all over the car, its too slow, it rattles unbeleivably no matter what speed your driving, the alloys have kerbing on all 4 and a dent in 1 caused be me being forced into a 'escape up the kerb or get crashed into by a range rover' situation

The brakes I can sort out with an avensis upgrade

Don't know what to do about laquer, will probably just plastidip the entire car

The lack of speed will be staying I cant allow myself to spend supra/skyline car money on adding 1-200bhp when I could just buy a supra/skyline

I'm going to strip most of the rear interior, if it isn't there it cant rattle being my logic, should improve the cars feel aswell

I'm looking for more alloys same as mine but its annoying having to replace something I didnt damage(didnt think itd bother me when buying the car)

The crash damage should be fixed in 2 weeks

I plan on treating myself to a strut brace and some flocked bits to try cheer myself and the car up hah

Get the TRD/GT kit and fit that. Instant sex.

If you're looking for more power on the cheaper side, get stage 2 cams? £650 fitted i think and gives you 'lift power' from 4k i think? Tempted by that myself.

I've got the same sort of issues as you though, rattling annoys me. I plan to put some roof flashing and closed cell foam all around the inside lining of the boot. I believe taking your rear seats etc out will stop some rattles but will also give you a serious amount of road noise through the back.

Brakes are poor so I'm doing the Avensis brake upgrade this weekend.

As far as the crows feet go, not much you can do unless you plan on re-lacquering the whole thing.

Alloys, either buy a new set for fairly cheap people are always selling them.. or refurb them :) I bought a set of team dynamics, refurbed them gunmetal grey and then sold my originals so total spend was only £150

I'm a bit horrified to read that you would consider buying your girlfrend new clothes to change her when you get bored with her!!! I hope she doesn't read this, or she'll know to take a walk next time you buy her some clothes!

May be there's a bit of psychology here - you are partly blaming the car for your crash and so taking it out on the poor thing! May be you should be kicking yourself - not the car. (although we don't know the circumstances of your crash).

Buy some cream for the crows feet, or do as Lozmachine suggests and buy something to change it because you love it  .

I used be the same when I had my gen 6....loved it when it was all working then as soon as something needed replacing or something broke when Ive just spent loads of money I'd hate it! But as said above I just spent some money and enjoyed a good drive to remind myself how good they are, and I loved it again.

I bought a gen 7 140 a few weeks back and I love it but I'm sure I'll swear at it at some point!

Mine had a lot of rattles in the boot so I got onto them straight away as I knew it would annoy me, I found it just to be the trays either side in the boot and the parcel shelf. So didnt take long to fix with rubber strips under the trays and rubber piping on the aside edges of the parcel shelf.

If I was you I'd refurb the wheels, give the brakes a good service.

Oh dear.

A few questions..........

1. What did you pay for it?

2. What do you expect from a car for that?

3. What better car for the money would you get now?

No one can make you love a car any more than they can make you love a person. If it's not the right car for you then move on,

but every car has its good and bad points the gen 7 included.

Perhaps you will feel better after your cycle is finished?

Sell it and buy a GT4. I had the same problem when i got my first gen 6 GT almost 10 years ago now. was fine for the first couple of years but then started to get a bit stale. I sold the car on and replaced it with another brand the lasted less than 6 months hated the car and returned to another gen 6 GT. Over the course of 10 years i have returned to the Gen 6 5 times in total and once to a gen 5. all for the same reason non of the cars i replaced them with could come close to the look, feel and practicality of the Celica`s. The cars i had inbetween were Clio 172, Prelude VTI, Corrola Tsport, (cheap motoring Escorts mondeos couple of civics VTI`s) all the the cars lasted less than a year before i was jumping back into a celica. The latest was the Tsport but that made way for a gen 6 GT4 and i`ll never look back.

The GT4 hasn`t been perfect and has required abit of work and some money but it was to be expected for picking up for cheap cheap. The car drives great now and always puts a massive smile on your face on boost.

All the best and good luck in your search for happyness

Get shut mate, nowt worse than a car you hate. You'll end up binning it driving out of anger at some point, I nearly did with mine last week

Go test drive a few other cars which take your fancy, they'll either wake up your senses again or make you realise that the Celica chassis is pretty darn good.

PS F*ck the strut brace off & go for a front anti roll bar upgrade + poly bushed front engine mount, that'll liven things up a bit.

Like my wife says of the children, I love them all the time but don't always like them!

My car seems to have decided to cripple me through hip pain, although in truth, it's probably got as much to do with me being a little over weight as it does 22 year old bucket seats.

But if the love really has gone - and I can imagine it would with a dent that size - then best get shot of it and find something else.

p.s. This is not an indication of anything that my wife or I might be planning to do with our kids.

Clothes is a blanket term that most definitely includes underwear :P

I paid the bargain sum of £1000, I know in my head I wont get much more car for the money especially with built in sat nav haha

I got exactly what I expected, the bad points on the car mattered little to me but as time goes on the shine is wearing off, maybe its the fact I haven't driven it in 3 weeks and money is tight so fixing her is going to skint me for the next month and I've got christmas coming up and my girlfriends birthday a week before that

I am on depressant linked medication and am wondering if perhaps I'm taking it out on the car as a channel that cannot argue back(that probably sounds ridiculous to everyone but the more I think about it the more I think its probably right)

I think before I make the leap and sell or whatever I will get the car repaired, fill the tank and not come home until its almost empty like I did every weekend following my purchase of the car back when we were madly in love haha

You guys have talked me into giving her another chance, I'm grateful, thank you :)

Daytona its funny you should mention my cycle finishing, my girlfriend swears blind I have a man period most months (not physically of course)

It is quite the 'dent'

However with the help of AMS I've got all the parts I need minus front bumper for a really decent price, Just the heavy side of £100, fitting the bits shouldn't costs much/take too long but the inner wheel arch will need bending out which I can't do

Danny, there is a remarkable cross section of humanity on here bud ! We pick up on all sorts.

You were sounding very like my eldest. He was in love with his FTO until re ran it down the motorway with no water in it. 2 engine rebuilds later and strangely the love was gone.

He now claims to be happy as Larry in a 20 yr old Micra that isnt emptying his bank account on a regular basis. He gets his "blues" from his mother who gets it reeeeal bad so I did feel the vibes.

Keep calm. Carry on!
