Thermostat change
From Wiki
Tools/parts needed:
- 1/4 drive ratchet, extension piece and 10 and 13mm sockets
- New thermostat and gasket (get them from Toyota, they're not expensive)
- Pliers
- Coolant (get some Long Life Red, again from Toyota)
It is doable with the alternator still in place, but more awkward.
The housing can now be removed. Ease it gently towards the front of the car as shown in Pic 3, this will result in loss of quite a bit of coolant, but this will be replaced later. You can now see the thermostat inside the housing. Pull the housing free and remove from the car.
Now you need to remove the thermostat from the housing, it simply pulls out. Get your new thermostat and install the new gasket to it. It goes around the widest part of the thermostat, copy your old thermostat. Pop your new thermostat back into the housing, re install the housing back onto the car and put it all back together. Be sure not to over tighten the 10mm housing nuts, its possible to snap the studs and you really dont want to do that. They don't need to be mega tight, just pinch them.
Tighten the 10mm housing nuts to 6Nm/4.4ftlb
After your done you now need to replace the coolant you lost. Fill it back up to the top via the radiator cap and run the car with the cap off and the heater dial set to max, to allow any air to escape. There is another guide in this section if you are unsure about this. Job done.
