According to my local dealer, these pumps very rarely fail. "If the motor is not spinning it's likely there's a bit of crap wedged in the impeller. Give the pump a whack with a hammer, that usually shifts it."


The windscreen washer pump is mounted in the bottom of the windscreen washer reservoir which is under the offside front wheel arch, in front of the wheel behind the wheel arch liner. The pump has two outlets and supplies washer water to both the front and rear screens. It achieves this by running in one direction to pump out of one outlet, and the opposite direction to pump from the second outlet.


There are choices on how to access the pump. It is possible to get to it with the car on the ground and the wheels in place, but you're just making it hard for yourself so I wouldn't recommend it. My preferred way is to jack the car up (the whole front or just the one corner) and remove the wheel. This gives more space to work and makes it easier to see what you're doing.


Remove the black plastic spoiler from the bottom edge of the front corner (if fitted). There is instructions in the owner's manual for this (see fig.3).


Starting from the front (underneath, by the towing eye), remove the bolts and screws holding the arch liner in place (crosshead and 10mm hex). You can take them all out (20), and remove the liner completely, but the liner is a real pig to get in and out so I recommend just taking the screws out from the front to the centreline of the wheel and bending the liner (it's quite flexible) out of the way.


You can now see the windscreen washer reservoir and the pump at it's outer bottom edge (see fig.4). UK spec cars have two pumps. The one towards the front is for the headlight washers. There are two hoses attached, just pull them off, and unplug the electrical connection. The pump then just pulls out of the side of the reservoir. Unless the reservoir is already empty the contents will now drain out of the hole left by the pump (straight into your face if you're lying underneath!), so you can either be ready with a bucket or just let it go.


Before you fit the new pump, flush some clean water through the reservoir as there will usually be some debris in the bottom (which probably caused the pump to fail in the first place). Give the rubber seal that the pump sits in a wipe to make sure there's nothing that will stop it sealing properly, and then refit everything. The arch liner is complicated with various clips and screws, some bits go under, some bits go over. If you get lost, go around the other side of the car and check that one.
