The first thing you need to do is examine your console layout.
Mine is a Gen 7 2002 model which I am guessing is subtly different to the newer cars!
The picture to the right shows what my Celica looked like with factory fitted Sony Double Din Stereo.
Remove the cigarette lighter/gear surround
To do this I found it easiest to pull upwards from the back of the leather gear sleeve.
- Un-hook the leather sleeve.
- The sleeve is mounted to the plastic by a wire frame which you can just squeeze and un-hook.
- Disconnect cigarette lighter.
- At the back of the lighter holder is a catch. Press this down and the connector should slide out.
Remove the centre console
To remove the console you must first take out the two screws found underneath the aircon unit
They are marked in the picture on the right as dots
Un-clip the aircon unit
To remove the console section first disconnect the two aircon cables.
Place your hand underneath the bottom left of the unit and feel upwards.
There are two clips. I have shown them reversed on a disconnected unit
Now comes the tricky part!!!
Gently prize-up the silver plastic console including the aircon unit outwards and upwards.
When you get movement around the stereo I found it easiest to open the storage unit and prize out the top part HORIZONTALLY!
If you carry on pivoting at the top you are likely to snap the tabs!.
Un-clip the clock power
You will find that once the console is removed you are still tied by a power cable connected to the clock.
Gently squeeze the connector like before and pull out.
Tricky part complete!!!
Sony facia removal
Turn over the Console and locate the 4 screws which hold on the facia.
Gently remove these and the plastic washers and store for future use.
Remove Sony Head Unit
There are four bolts used to mount the Sony HU to the dash.
Remove these bolts carefully and don't drop them!!!
Disconnect the Sony cables from the main wiring loom and remove the Sony cable with the unit.
Store for future use.
Step 5 ISO wiring
When wiring up the new HU to the ISO wiring loom I found there was one discrepancy.
The Japanese cars tend to have the 12V and Ignition cables inverted.
Some head units allow you to swap these on the cables, but I inverted them on the ISO connector as I also had a hands free car kit to install.
Attaching Head Unit and Bracket
This can be quite tricky to do so be patient!
Mount the facia to the left and right Stereo bracket using the 4 nuts/bolts.
Note: they are very Slightly miss aligned off the vertical plane so try to tighten as best you can in a straight level.
For the Head unit itself you have two options!
- Mount the HU in the standard aluminum sleeve and insert into the plastic facia. I did this for my Alpine and cut and bent back some of the aluminum to lock it in place.
- Or, drill a hole in the side of the Toyota bracket and screw the head unit directly in.
Obviously you could not quickly release!

Mounting Head Unit
After connecting the ISO wiring loom to the car and the back of the HU, bolt back into the car.
I found that it was recommended to push the brackets as far upwards as possible before tightening otherwise the console does not fit back on well.
At this point you should be able to test!!!
If you can power on without the Ignition on you should have inverted your cables
Not that this makes a whole lot of difference!!!
Putting back the console
Basically you need to invert your previous process. Connect the clock power and gently push down the console around the new facia.
It is quite tight so a gentle bit of bending is required! Re-insert the aircon cables and screw the unit back into place with the two screws.
Insert the gear surround and attach the cigarette lighter power.
Clip the gear leather surround back into place and gently clip the unit back into the car.
Bingo - believe it or not you have completed and saved yourself a good £50 in the process
Here's what mine looked like after the operation
Additional Notes
Some Head units like my 60 watt Alpine require a direct power cable from the battery.
They can potentially pull up to 20 AMPs, which is a significantly higher rating than the cable used by the cars main wiring loom.
To run direct power to the battery, please see the Gen 7 Power guide!
I would also like to make a big shout out to the following members who helped me in my recent endeavor to fit my ICE.
Without them I would still be floundering in the mud! Cheers Njay, Perry190, CraigR, magma2k and anyone else I missed!!!
Further Pictures
If you are feeling inventive you can also try a mod like I did for my CD Changer.
This involved a craft knife, some packaging foam and plenty of swearing trying to get my CD Changer to fit inside my glove compartment.
The Alpine 6 disc fits beautifully!!!
