EUROPEAN PREMIERE - NEW CELICA CONVERTIBLE UNWRAPPED

For immediate release 18 October, 1994

BIRMINGHAM - The 70th British International Motor Show witnesses the European premiere of the new Celica convertible. A lighter weight and more rigid construction for the stylish third generation convertible results in more fun-to-drive handling.

Based on the Celica GT Coupe, a model not available in Europe, the new convertible will offer an easier-to-use power top as standard equipment. Durable cloth top will feature a headliner to provide additional sound insulation. Other improvements include:

  • additional rear-seat shoulder room (+ 260mm comparing to previous model) is possible thanks to a new top frame that moves the siderails outward as the top folds back from the windshield to behind the wider rear seatback
  • improved visibility in the rear thanks to the adoption of large curved quarter windows
  • tinted rear glass window with standard electric defogger
  • twin electric motors to power the new gear-driven top mechanism for more precise control than the previous hydraulic system which allows the top to join with the windshield header
  • new vertical-motion latches to secure and release the top more easily

Other improvements to the Celica’s convertible top include overlapping top cover seams that make sure that less rain drips from the roof onto the side windows. Improved weatherstripping helps prevent wind noise and leakage, and the top’s die-cast alloy frame employs new permanently lubricated bushings with closer tolerance to help reduce squeaks and rattles.

True driving pleasure looks beyond raw power: it takes into account the availability and delivery of that power. Good low-end torque for example enhances the perception of performance. The Celica convertible’s 2.0 liter twin cam, 4 cylinder, 16-valve engine generates 129kW of peak power, with maximum torque of 186 Nm at 4,800 rpm. Specifications are largely the same as the European specification Celica GT.

The new Celica convertible offers significant improvement in body shell torsional rigidity. Cross rods are adopted in the rear, and reinforcements are added to front pillars, areas around the door and the top stack retracting areas.

Front and rear suspension subframes help provide sports car-like tracking, along with front and rear offset coil springs, low-pressure gas-filled shock absorbers and ball-type stabiliser bars. Independent MacPherson struts are used in front, with independent dual-link shock absorbers in the back.

The conversion work on the new Celica convertible is performed by Automotive Speciality Company, a division of ASC Inc., of the United States. The collaboration between Toyota and ASC goes back some 10 years.

Production of the new Celica convertible, which received its World premiere at last year’s Tokyo Motorshow, started in Japan in July. Sales targets for this model in 1995 are 5,400 worldwide and 300 for Europe.

Standard Celica GT convertible features include power rack-and-pinion steering and power front and rear windows. Options include ABS, CFC-free air conditioning and leather interior.
