wintersun
Hi all, long story short. I have lost my locking key for my front alloys and I need to get my front tyres changed as they are on the legal limit. Have any of you lovely people got one of these Mcgard lock nut key, heres the code of the key I need. Looks like this: and heres my Mcgard reg paper which shows the code number 24157SU I only need to borrow it to undo the 2 front ones as I have replacement nuts to go back on. I can pay for recorded delivery to and back to the owner of the key. Edited March 21, 2015 by wintersun
Kev 16v
That's a long shot, but you never know. I take it you know the 24157SU is the type number, not the code number, should you ring McGard on Monday.
wintersun
I've emailed Mcgard, I think it's £18 for a new key from them. But I'm not putting locking nuts back on ask had to get the rears cut off. The code is 09724 54711
Paulus3476
You can hammer a slightly undersized socket on and remove them quite easily that way - a ruined socket is a lot cheaper than £18.
SKINY
^^ works a treat that, Halfrauds sell a locknut removal tool too. basicly its just a socket that grips as it turns, not a bad bit of kit either. i used them years ago. an old undersize socket lieing abouts a fair bit cheaper
wintersun
nice one, how much do halfords sell them for?
Paulus3476
They're quite expensive, and no better than using a socket.
wintersun
i'll have to by a socket then as I don't have any big enough to fit. my local garage want £20 for them to remove to locking nuts!!!
Paulus3476
A socket will cost you a couple of quid, at most - don't buy a really crap one, you need to hammer it on without it cracking.
wintersun
ok cool thanks, just seen a YouTube video using oversized socket, think that's probably my best bet don't suppose you know what kind of size I should go for?
Paulus3476
Trial and error I'm afraid - find the size that just fits snuggly over it - the next size down will be the one you want.
wintersun
ok cheers, how do I get the socket off the locking nut so I can do the other one?
Paulus3476
It will knock out quite easily.

_Chris_
Use a 12 point socket for this, not 6 point. Twice as many contact points and they're much sharper. Just shows what a waste of time locking nuts are.

Just shows what a waste of time locking nuts are. Shows why you should insist on use torque wrench when tightening them up. Sadly that eliminates ~70% of garages. Kev 16v
I'm surprised members are advising the undersized socket and hammer method, not when you can spend a measly £18 without risking damaging the rim, and then sell the lockers on as a complete set if you don't want them. ams
I'm with Kev on this - the mc guard nuts I think have an outer spinning sleeve - order the key for £18 before you damage and make a bigger job
