Invest in a hat and you can enjoy top down motoring year round.
I bought my mr2 roadster in December and drove top down with heater on from day one. Just make sure you warm the car up before dropping the roof and it will be fine.
A lot of garages are Getting wise to tyre sites like camskill and tyreleader where you can make big savings. They have increased their fitting prices if they offer it at all which is annoying. Small independents who will fit them for cash in hand are best.
I would say its probably facelift with a pre facelift bumper. Mine is November 2002 and is facelift.

I do think it's admirable that you would want to sort this problem for him but at the end of the day the guy bought a 2nd hand engine on eBay. To the best of your knowledge it was fine when it was in your car. You don't know anything about the person who installed the engine in his car, absolutely anything could have gone wrong.
I would email him with suggestions given above but at the end of the day it's really not your problem.
I was thinking the same thing. As a fun weekend car it's worth keeping unless of course you really need the money or space on your drive. The thing that would force me to sell mine is a need for more practicality and the miles I do.
